Canadian Tate McRae's Team USA Olympics ad is treason

Earlier today, we came down on Auston Matthews for appearing in a pro–Team USA ad promoting NBC as an Olympic broadcaster. To be fair, Matthews is from Arizona, and it’s only natural that he’s playing for his home country in Milan. But you’d think his ties to Toronto would inspire a little loyalty, or at least give him reservations about talking shit.

You know, loyalty? Where a country puts its heart in your hands and you don’t respond by stomping all over it? It’s a pretty basic concept, but apparently not one well known by Tate McRae, who recently outed herself as a Team USA spokesperson—and she is literally [grabs megaphone] from Canada!

If you don’t know McRae, you are either not young or not cool. The So You Think You Can Dance champ from Calgary has become a global pop star in recent years. In the past, she’s leaned into her Canadian identity with the whole sexy hockey glove thing. Two years ago, she joined Justin Bieber, Will Arnett and Michael Bublé as celebrity co-captains for the NHL’s All-Star game.

But it seems there has been a change of allegiance. McRae appears in a new ad promoting both Team USA and this weekend’s Super Bowl: “I’m trying to get to Milan…to meet Team USA,” the singer informs her co-star (an Italian-speaking owl). She goes on to plug the opening ceremonies, American figure skating and Lindsey Vonn’s epic comeback.

Watching the ad, you’d have absolutely no idea that McRae was born and raised in the Great White North, so the only question worth asking at this point is: Does Tate McRae remember she’s from Canada? Has she been so busy pumping out hits and partnering with problematic country bros that she completely missed the part where our former ally is threatening to invade us?

Of course, Canadians on X are all over Tate’s treason: in the words of one user, “Girl ur from Calgary, u grew up going to the Saddledome and the Stampede, quit pretending ur from the country that was threatening to annex us this time last year.”

It’s hard to predict whether McRae’s betrayal will have consequences given the size of the American market. But she may want to at least consider a mea culpa before she shows her face at the Junos.
