Could BlackBerry’s appeals to national pride actually be working? According to a new report from iQmetrix, a supplier of retail-management software to the wireless industry, BlackBerry phones actually outsold Apple iPhones over the course of the past six months—but only in Toronto.

Judging by iQmetrix’s numbers—which the company says were assembled with data from 15,000 stores across the continent—a higher percentage of BlackBerry phones were purchased in Toronto than in any other North American city between December and May. In total, according to the report, BlackBerry accounted for 22.6 per cent of local phone sales, compared to Apple’s 20 per cent. (Samsung has the lead, with 33 per cent.) Meanwhile, across North America, BlackBerry only accounted for around six per cent of sales.

The Waterloo-based company may no longer own the roof over its head, but evidently Torontonians aren’t ready to give up their work phones just yet.
