BlackBerry is still more popular than Apple—at least, in Toronto

Could BlackBerry’s appeals to national pride actually be working? According to a new report from iQmetrix, a supplier of retail-management software to the wireless industry, BlackBerry phones actually outsold Apple iPhones over the course of the past six months—but only in Toronto.
Judging by iQmetrix’s numbers—which the company says were assembled with data from 15,000 stores across the continent—a higher percentage of BlackBerry phones were purchased in Toronto than in any other North American city between December and May. In total, according to the report, BlackBerry accounted for 22.6 per cent of local phone sales, compared to Apple’s 20 per cent. (Samsung has the lead, with 33 per cent.) Meanwhile, across North America, BlackBerry only accounted for around six per cent of sales.
The Waterloo-based company may no longer own the roof over its head, but evidently Torontonians aren’t ready to give up their work phones just yet.
I love my BlackBerry Z30. Switched back to BlackBerry from using iPhone and Android not going back.
I wonder how those numbers would look if adjusted for people only buying for personal use (rather than through work)? Almost everyone I know who has a blackberry, got it from work. Where they have the choice (or are spending their own money), they’ve almost all bought Apple or Samsung.
What part of “retail” don’t you understand?
I obviously missed the part of the article that stated that the survey only measured sales for personal use. Oh wait – you mean it doesn’t actually say that? hmmmmmm.
“Judging by iQmetrix’s numbers—which the company says were assembled with data from 15,000 stores…”
Why is that not clear to you? When a company or government buys 100s or 1000s of BlackBerry devices, they don’t do it at a retail store. Sheesh.
It does not surprise me. Through all the mis-managed BlackBerry steps in 2013, it never changed to fact that BB10 is a brilliant new operating worth looking at. Toronto had great advertising in the likes of “Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment” on their side. The Air Canada Center was and still is filled with BlackBerry logos. Plus, BlackBerry ads played throughout every Leaf and Raptors game. Hopefully, the rest of Canada will take a serious look in the future. Three new high end BB10 devices should help in October this year.
