Canadians may see Apple as more “leading edge,” but Research In Motion remains the leader in Canada’s smartphone market—albeit just barely. At the end of 2011, BlackBerry had 32.6 per cent of the market, compared to Apple’s 31.2 per cent, according to data from research firm comScore. At first glance, given RIM’s recent troubles, that sounds like surprisingly good news for the Waterloo-based firm. But it’s really not, considering the fact that RIM started the year with a market share of 42.1 per cent. In other words, the company lost a whopping 10 per cent of the market in just nine months.
