All hell breaks loose during G20 protest at Queen and Spadina; TTC finally has reason for late streetcars
News is trickling in via Twitter and TV that a flare set off at Spadina and Queen West has shut down traffic, including all TTC service, at the busy intersection. Reports indicate that the crowd’s “change in dynamics” has inspired police to put on gas masks and send in mounted units. Emergency services are unable to get through the thick crowds to attend to individuals with alleged head wounds. A Toronto Life reporter has just confirmed that a police vehicle has had its windows smashed.
As for the TTC, the Red Rocket has cancelled subway service south of Bloor Street and killed service on the following routes: 5,6,65,75,94,501,504,505,506,509,510. Mysteriously, the 511 is still running up Bathurst (for now). Subways are not presently being replaced by shuttle buses.
Images of the smoky brouhaha can been seen via Twitter here and here, while cops getting into their riot gear can be seen here.
Great work on closing the TTC from Bloor on south. You’ve effectively tripled the number of people who are now on the streets and in harms way. Brilliant!
Who are these stupid people getting caught up and sitting around filming and chanting after all the protests are over? They’re just passively provoking police, this is all a bunch of crap. I’m so beyond anger at what has happened today in my city and my immediate community. What angers me the MOST is putting people in danger and trying to trip up the horses with golf balls. These so called “protesters” disgust me.
Toronto has gone crazy. A lot of non protestors have been caught up and chased by police as they cannot get anywhere as the TTC downtown is out of service
i don’t really get it i thought people have the right to protest as long it is a peaceful assembly, what rights do the police have to arrest them?
