Kraft’s Pride Oreo spurs stupid people to go cuckoo bananas (including calls to boycott a cookie—yes, a cookie)
Apparently, Rob Ford isn’t the only round thing with a mushy white middle stirring up controversy around Pride Week this year. Kraft, maker of the Oreo cookie, inadvertently started a brouhaha of its own when it posted a picture of a cookie with rainbow-coloured icing—accompanied by the slogan “Proudly support love!”—to its official Facebook page as part of its 100-year anniversary celebrations for the Oreo (happy birthday to you, delicious little biscuit!). Unfortunately, the Interwebs went a little insane over the loud-and-proud sweet, with hundreds of homophobic comments piling up on Kraft’s page, including a call to boycott the brand for its support of gay rights (one more sensible commenter noted he wouldn’t buy this particular cookie because of the absurd amount of stuffing—to which we say, yes, that is a good reason not to buy a cookie). Thirteen hours later, Kraft pulled the picture down, along with the thread of bigoted remarks. Undeterred, other gay-positive, cookie-affirming, soon-to-be-diabetic Internet crazies have started an online petition demanding the company produce the real thing. [National Post]
UPDATE: Kraft’s Pride Oreo Facebook post is back (and so too are all the comments)! Check it out [Facebook] »
It’s still up there, I believe.
The picture is still up and so are all the comments.
WOW, I WISH THIS WAS REAL..WOULD LOVE TO EAT THIS COOKIE!
ME LOVE COOKIES! COOKIE MONSTER WOULD HAVE A FIELD DAY.
MAYBE SESAME STREET CAN DO A SHOW, WITH COOKIE EATING RAINBOW OREO COOKIES.
FOR THOSE WHO HAVE NO SENSE OF HUMOR – LIGHTEN UP!
LIFE IS TOO SHORT TO MISS OUT ON THE FUN.
I’M A SENIOR CITIZEN, BUT A YOUNG AT HEART GRANDMA.
Business’ should stay out of politics and social issues. It is not appropriate for Oreo to jump on the gay bandwagon just to sell their transfatty cookies. Being gay and supporting gay is the new “cool” thing to do and it is stupid. Who cares who you are having sex with?! That is something that is a private matter and should be kept in the bedroom. Straight people don’t walk around saying, “Straight pride! We are straight everyone, isn’t it great?!” This being gay is cool thing needs to end. I am sick and tired of it and I am sick and tired of people supporting the gay community just because it is cool. What you do and who you like is your business but don’t make it into a fad. The fact that people have to say this is a cool thing leads me to believe that the majority of the gays are not gay at all but just doing it for attention.
“Rob Ford isn’t the only round thing with a mushy white middle” – NOT FUNNY. This comment is offensive. It’s ok to make fun of someone’s size but not their sexuality? Bashing is bashing.
Crystal Rhoades, you’re probably in highschool. I’ve heard many people express your sentiment, and every last one have been highschoolers. You just don’t get it. Gays are being oppressed in this country, and all over the world. It’s not about being “cool”. It’s about standing up for what’s right against bigoted douche-nozzles.
Gay vegans with tattoos are the biggest douche-nozzles.
It’s great to see support after years of company’s hiding there views in the closet.I know that being gay is not a life choice! Some day genetics will prove that we were born with a diferent gene.Just think about it, who in their right mind would choose to be discriminated upon, murdered, teased, victims of hate crimes, and out casts in many organizations and businesses. Cudos for General Mills for the support and the acceptance we deserve. I will now buy Oreos every time I go to the store.
ps: start making packages of mixed individual rainbow colors
Blah, blah, blah, gay. Blah, blah, blah, gay. Okay, we get it you were born this way. Thanks. Now go live your life already.
Exactly get over it you aren’t normal and ain’t going to lie to you
Crystal Rhodes: I will shut up about my sexuality when straight sexuality is no longer the only “lifestyle choice” portrayed in movies, on TV, used in advertising, recognized as valid, protected by law… It’s going to be a while. Get comfortable and have a cookie.
MPW: Blah blah blah I get it, you’re straight, you were born this way. Now stop letting companies lead you around by the penis by flashing a model’s boobs next to every product, or make you think you’re worthless without a man and BAYBEEZ because I really don’t need to hear about your heterosexuality. Keep it to yourself, thanks. Go live your life already.
Nic: You’re not normal, either. “Normal” implies some textbook median for all humanity to be compared to, and humanity is too diverse and complex for any of us to be “normal”. Everyone is going to be off-center to one side or another. It also implies that one value is worth more than another simply by being more prevalent, and that’s a really lame justification for bigotry. “There are more of me, so you’re wrong”. LOL WUT.
i am really surprised at the level of conversation on both sides of the argument. surprised that people really don’t understand what pride is all about, the history behind and the struggle that brought it forward and how things like this weekend’s celebrations remind people of the struggle that has occured and the struggles for others which still remain (here and around the world due to ignorance or intolerance. it is far more and completely beyond what people do in the bedroom (or bathhouse).
people are tired of hearing about it or reminded about it not because it they hear it more than a celine dion titanic song but because on some level they don’t want to hear about it because of the intolerance. really it is only for a week and then nothing again for another year. its kind of annoying like christmas carols when shopping in november…but it goes away.
some people will say blah, blah, blah you’re accepted or that its not normal….when ALL people-be it gay/straight/tg/ts, white/black/brown/blue/green, christian/muslim/buddhist, tall/short/skinny/fat…etc.etc… have the ability to live, work, dream, sleep, succeed or fail without discrimination then we will be a successful, understanding, caring society…we need to learn to raise people up not tear them down, embrace what makes us different and unique
it is great when business embrace differences and that we can find those businesses who understand our needs as people. it is more than the right to marry-it always has been…it is about being treated with respect, dignity and equality.
being gay is not a political or social issue and cookies should not be the scapegoat-they just need to be delicious.
enjoy pride or canada day or the jays game….enjoy life and remember that we only get this one life-why make it harder for you or anyone else….
Lame.
Chris & onthesunnysideofthestreet: Wonderful, articulate arguments.
Beth: Yes you are.
The decision to do this was a business one. It does send a wonderful message, but it also means Nabisco feels that the extra business they can pick up for supporting LGBT rights will make up for any potential boycotts from bigots.
Fully agree with Karen. It is not okay to make fun of someone’s size or shape, no more than it is okay to make fun of someone’s sexuality. I am no Rob Ford fan, but it’s because of his politics, not his size. Not cool T-Life.
I thought all gays were vegan? Oreo cookies use animal fat don’t they?
I just would like to know where I can purchase these cookies in Ottawa? Lighten up people
How can blogs and companies leave up hate speech and ignorant comments. Ofcourse I believe in free speech but not at expense of bullying, racism, sexism or homophobia. Time to delete the hateful comments by the ignorant and fearful people. Kraft should stand by it’s original post and not let small minded people influence them. It’s the only way we can evolve. Love is love people. Wake up.
AND TORONTO LIFE SHOULD REMOVE THE HATE SPEECH FROM THIS POST. iSN’T THAT ILLEGAL?
