St. Lawrence’s residents, neighbourhood association and councillor are all rallying against several development proposals for condominiums in their backyard. As expected, the latest scheme to draw the locals’ ire is from Pemberton Group, which owns the entire block bound by Front Street East, Princess Street, The Esplanade and Lower Sherbourne Street, and wants to build a pair of condo towers of 33 and 34 storeys. In keeping with the usual tone of Toronto battles between developers and residents, the rhetoric is loaded and the melodrama high. President of the St. Lawrence Neighbourhood Association Suzanne Kavanagh says, “We feel like our area is under siege,” while Councillor Pam McConnell is adamant that “nobody—not I or the residents—will let [the developers] destroy the fabric of this community.” [Toronto Star]
