Brunch is a way of life in this town, where we’ll queue with bed head and a hangover for perfect eggs. Below, five dishes worth rising early(ish) for.
BLUEBERRY PANCAKES Brunch at Mildred’s Temple Kitchen—especially the fluffy hot cakes, fully rigged with berry bombs—is consistently excellent. A side of sweet fennel sausage ($5) begs for belt loosening. $12. EGGS BENNY One, Yorkville’s prime perch, is known for its A-list clientele and pricey cocktails, but it should also be famous for serving the city’s best Benny. Lemony hollandaise, impeccably poached eggs, artisanal ham and crisp toasted brioche set a new standard for the breakfast classic. $17. FRITTATA Gallery Grill’s vaulted ceilings make this hushed space feel like a brunch cathedral. Chef Suzanne Baby aims for fresh and local and does both spectacularly: airy organic eggs, gooey brie and house-cured duck prosciutto exude breakfast decadence. $15. PORTOBELLO MUSHROOM AND RAPINI OMELETTE The golden half moon omelette at Brad’s brings a salty nest of portobello mushrooms, fresh, bitter rapini, tangy goat cheese and sweet, juicy tomatoes. $9.50. ITALIAN SAUSAGE AND RED PEPPER OMELETTE The new College Street outpost of Mitzi’s serves up an airy egg envelope stuffed with spicy sausage and asiago cheese; the sourdough toast alone is worth the lineup. $13.75. 890 College St., 416-533-7400.
