Ice-cream seekers in the Ossington area have a difficult, albeit delightful, choice to make: grab a scoop at Bang Bang, the new Bakerbots spin-off on the south end of the strip, or opt instead for Sweet Olenka’s, a rival parlour that has popped up for the summer just around the corner on Queen West. It’s the temporary offshoot of an Etobicoke shop by the same name, which has earned a devout west-end following for its meticulously handcrafted (and adventurously flavoured) sweets: curried-pineapple truffles, salted-caramel brownies and tubs of single-batch ice cream blended with things like candied ginger, maple-glazed bacon and brandied figs with goat cheese. At the pop-up location, scoop options include chocolate-ramen (shot through with squiggly dried noodles) and black sesame with wasabi—a sinus-blasting revelation.
