Mark those calendars: KFC’s Double Down coming to Canada in 11 days
Few sandwiches have received as much attention as the Double Down, KFC’s grease-fest that features bacon and cheese squeezed between two pieces of boneless fried chicken. Morbidly curious Torontonians interested in trying it, however, were disappointed to learn that their local Colonels were not selling the thing. Well, that’s all about to change. The Double Down will be available in Canada from October 18 to November 14.
A press release about this non-event tells us that 47 per cent of Canadians want to try the artery-clogger while 64 per cent of Canadians think the Double Down should be available here—if not to eat, then to watch their co-workers slowly get fat. See, the sandwich has 540 calories, 30 grams of fat and 1,740 milligrams of sodium. (To compare, a Quarter Pounder with Cheese from McDonald’s has 530 calories, 28 grams of fat and 1,110 milligrams of sodium. A Whopper from Burger King has 670 calories, 40 grams of fat and 970 milligrams of sodium.) Its bunlessness, however, means that Double Down is Atkins approved.
We’ve also been advised that there will be a wall of shfame section on the sandwich’s Facebook page where diners, in what will surely be the finest moment of their lives, can post photos of themselves with the Double Down.
We know what we’ll be giving thanks for this weekend.
Amazing…i’m treating my girlfriend for dinner on October 18th
If these are typical of their normal meals cholesterol shouldn’t be an issue. They’ll only be large enough to feed a three year old.
I’m dumping you.
Guess i’m going solo
1.7 kg of sodium, damn that’s a lot.
It pays to be able to read and count doesn’t it Torontolife?
Your quote that the Double Down has “1,740 grams of sodium” is not only dumb but it’s completely implausible. The KFC website shows that it has 1380 MG…yes…it’s milligrams!!!
Please hire bloggers who can count!!! You’ve lost a ton of credibility here.
it’s 1.7g (1700 mg) of sodium.. not 1.7 kg
You can get this sandwhich grilled, and ask them not to season the fillet before they cook it. Problem solved (and sounds delish).
Alexandra…how do you know this?!?!? I don’t know anyone who has personal “inside” knowledge about KFC and it’s cuisine…do you work for them?!? No, seriously, I had no idea one could opt for “grilling” and “no seasoning” etc. at a KFC. Mind you, it’s been quite some time since I’ve sampled their wares. If you’re right, Alexandra, and it sounds as though you know what you’re talking about…I might actually try the “grilled” version minus the salt!! Problem solved? Well, certainly partly (but it’s probably still not the best thing in the world to consume!!) but I totally agree with the “sounds delish” comment!!! It does, the way you’ve helped me envision it now!!! Thanks!!! I can hear “foodies” and “haute cuisine” snobs all over the City gasping in horror……..and that makes it all the more “delish”!!! Tee hee…………let’s Double Down, Alexandra!!!
they always look better than they actually taste … remember that
this sandwich is health food compared to this: http://www.healthzone.ca/health/dietfitness/diet/article/826732–new-burger-creation-nearly-triples-kfc-s-double-down-calorie-count
What KFC does very well is their grilled chicken. Too bad Canada never got to experience this!
I NEVER eat KFC, and this new sandwich is one reason why!! The ONLY time I might break my rule is for their boneless chicken wings, but the one time I did try them, they charged a MINT for a few of them, so I doubt I’ll ever order anything from them again!!
I wouldn’t feed this cr@p to dogs, and I don’t even like dogs.
Don, you type like you have ADD.
Good point Melanie, when I did the post I actually thgouht the calorie count was going to be much higher. Someone at my studio told me that KFC had lied & an independent study said the calories were more in the neighborhood of 1,200 but I couldn’t find a link (even a disreputable link) to refute their numbers. I do think the picture just looks gross and as far as this is why you’re fat goes A Big Mac as well as this chicken slab both are high ranking in my book ;-) Be well, Lisa
