Mario Batali predicts a Toronto location of Eataly within the next 10 years
In a recent interview with The Daily Meal, Mario Batali reignited simmering hopes that Eataly, the chain of grocery mega-emporia whose New York launch last year was rapturously received, would eventually make its way to Toronto. When asked about expansion plans, he told Ali Rosen:
Well there’ll probably be five in the next 10 years. I wouldn’t be surprised if Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., Toronto and Mexico City opened pretty much in any order of those four.
Let’s hope Toronto is at the top of that order.
He’ll have some tough competition from Alimento…….
Are you kidding? You obviously have never been to Eataly. Alimento is nothing like it and far inferior.
Eatley is an interesting attempt by North Americans to try and replicate the mercados that are commonplace in Europe. It isn’t bad, especially when you consider the limited space available in NYC, but it is definately overhyped and I don’t believe it warrants it’s own announcement declaring its eventual arrival to Toronto.
Momofuku on the other hand….
Who cares?
Not if he keeps doing this: http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2011-11-09/mario-batali-apologizes-for-comments-comparing-bankers-to-hitler-stalin.html

I hope they are not trying for the Young Carlton/College area…We already have a Mega Metro south of Gerrard…a Sobies at Alexander/Young, a very busy Metro under Winners, and now a new Sobies at College & Bay plus any minute the Loblaw’s Mega Store is oppening at what was Maple Leaf Gardens…HOW MUCH CAN WE EAT?
I wasn’t terribly impressed with Eataly but it would be nice to have it open here. Just don’t stick it anywhere near St. Lawrence Market. It doesn’t need the competition.
