A bit of news that should surprise no one: a man arrested near the Toronto G20 security fence has been acquitted. Gary McCullough of Haliburton, Ontario, was busted for carrying dangerous weapons after police found a chainsaw and crossbow in the rooftop carrier of his car. According to the Toronto Star, McCullough said that the crossbow was, er, for scaring off bears (to which we say, yikes!). The judge did prohibit McCullough from possessing weapons in the future due to a history of mental illness, but the Star also notes that the judge ruled that the police’s decision to interrogate McCullough before he’d spoken to a lawyer was a violation of his constitutional rights. So regardless of McCullough’s conduct, the incident amounts to yet another instance of police heavy-handedness during the G20 summit. Go figure. Read the entire story [Toronto Star] »
