Toronto Fashion Week: Tanya Taylor gets graphic for fall 2013

Each season, The Shows invite a handful of high-profile Canadian designers (many of whom now show in New York, London and Paris) to preview their collections in the days leading to Toronto Fashion Week. We’re posting full galleries from the buzziest runways. Here’s what trendsetters will be wearing in fall 2013.

DESIGNER
Tanya Taylor

IN A SENTENCE
After just three New York shows, the Toronto native’s cool-girl looks have already won raves from Style.com and Women’s Wear Daily, found a few celeb fans and received praise from Anna Wintour.

THE SCENE
Runway watchers speculated Suzanne Rogers might attend (she oohed from the front row at Taylor’s show last season), but the fashionable philanthropist didn’t show. There was a full contingent from Holt Renfrew, which just picked up Taylor’s line.

THE COLLECTION
Following her sweet, tropical turn for spring 2013, Taylor returned this season with a late 1960s-inspired collection full of medallion prints, boxy coats and black and orange leather. The layered looks—leather dickies are involved—are a bit masculine and a bit whimsical, the kind of clothes a Wes Anderson heroine might wear. We imagine shoppers snapping up the graphic knit sweaters and skirts, but the show’s highlights were a pair of jackets in fluffy pink fur and metallic raffia jacquard.

BEST PIECES
We loved all the topcoats, especially a smart-looking check number with zippered pockets. A knee-length skirt and moto jacket in one of Taylor’s fantastic prints look great together, but would make very wearable separates.
