1. I am so tired of reading reviews for Greta Constantine’s shows, and first and foremost, hearing about how they don’t participate in the Toronto Fashion put on by the FDCC, “in order to have more creative control”.

   The FDCC provides an in-house hair and make-up team for each participating designer. The designer provides these teams with specific instuctions – scripts, photographs, etc., that tell the stylists what to do and how to carry it out. Robin Kay, or one of her employees is not standing over the team, breathing down their neck, making sure she has final say. It’s a professional environment, and essentially, the designer is in charge.

   The FDCC provides and in-house production team that covers all lighting and techinical support, as per the instructions of the designer. And only the designer.

   It’s true, the FDCC wants final approval on any invites that go out, but their only concern is in ensuring the designers have complied with fashion week sponsorship guidelines – pretty simple, actually.

   From a designer’s perspective, participating in fashion week can often be a very expensive undertaking. A fee does have to be paid to the FDCC, (a registration fee, that exists at any fashion week – New York, Paris, London, etc.) then there are model fees, PR and publicist fees, graphic design and tech fees, and a million incidentals in between.

   I suspect the real heart of the issue, in GC’s non-participation in fashion week may be more fiscal than ‘creative’. They have managed to put a certain spin on it, which is great for them, but every review I read perpetuates that spoon-fed tagline, and it’s frustrating, as a reader and as a member of the industry, too.

   Frustrating that it’s still being used season after season, and frustrating that the reporter writing the review isn’t able to sift through the politics and spin and public relations b.s. and actually think for themselves instead of regurgitating something a savvy publicist has written for them.

   If GC doesn’t want to participate in Toronto’s Fashion Week, fine. They don’t have to. No one is trying to force them into it. The press has got to stop quoting their press release’s though, and do some of their own thinking.

3. i think your expectation a little high, most of so what call fashion reporters have no background in fashion nor what they looking at on the runway. Of course they are going to recycle old news.
