Is Hudson’s Bay nearing a deal to bring Uniqlo to Canada?
Hudson’s Bay CEO Richard Baker dropped a cagey hint this week that Japanese fast-fashion retailer Uniqlo could be coming to the iconic department store. Baker told the National Post that Uniqlo “is a dynamite company and it is very logical that they should be able to come and grow with us like Topshop”—but he wouldn’t say whether talks are currently underway. Although Hudson’s Bay has already acquired the Canadian rights for Topshop and Kleinfeld Bridal as part of its ongoing rebranding effort, we wouldn’t start making a Uniqlo shopping list just yet. Would much prefer to have a stand alone Uniqlo shop but guess this is better then no Uniqlo!
Does the Bay have space? I would imagine that they’d need space as big or even bigger than what they have for Topshop!
One of the best things about Uniqlo is the affordability of their stuff while still being stylish and excellent quality. If the Bay brings them in, one can bet there will be a pretty substantial mark up. I hope Uniqlo turns them down and comes in on their own.
It would be great to see the Uniqlo brand launch on its own without Hudson’s Bay.
Considering all the positive opinions I often see on the brand, I’m surprised they haven’t been more aggressive in expanding worldwide. From what I’ve read, quality is better than that of H&M and Zara, and better priced.
I have UNIQLO clothes I bought while living in Taiwan, the fashion, fit and quality is great! Cross between H&M meets GAP meets the land of the rising sun? ;)
