Target is coming to Canada
Target is coming to Canada
First was the news that Topshop is considering opening in The Bay, and now Target is contemplating a move north of the border. After a year of dismal sales stateside, Tar-jay, beloved for its cheap fashions and collaborations with credible labels like Rodarte, is considering whether expanding into the Canadian market would improve its outlook. Unfortunately, it will probably be at least three years until the retailer makes the move.
• Cheap-chic retailer Target coming to Canada [Toronto Star]
• Read an update to this story here: Goodbye Zellers, hello Target! The U.S. chain is finally coming to Canada, $1.8 billion later
Target is not coming to Canada. Target is contemplating coming to Canada, many years from now. There is a difference. Your headline is wrong.
NO thank you. We’ve already got enough unnecessary American big box stores like Costco, Wal-Mart, Best Buy and many others contributing to the excessive suburbanization and Americanization of Ontario and Canada. Do we really need more?
Topshop would be fine, as long as it resembles the location in Manhattan.
Nick,
I understand your frustration regarding the Americans taking over the retail scene.
But here’s a what you should remember: try not to think of Costco, Wal-Mart, Best Buy et al as “American”. Rather, just try thinking of them as knowing how to do retail right.
Just face it. Americans know shopping. They know about the entire retail experience and how to perfect it. We will never beat them in this arena.
Oh and about Target. One of my faves. But I will still be doing my cross-border shopping there I’m afraid for many years to come. The Target rumour has been swirling in Canadian retail circles for YEARS now. At least over 5 from what I can remember. So, although it would be great, I won’t hold my breath just yet.
Speaking of retail, I’m gonna say it again. Chapters/Indigo has books online for half if not LESS THAN HALF OFF for the SAME BOOKS you will buy in-store. I understand you have to pay for employees, lights, rents, etc. but come ON. This is UNACCEPTABLE.
NICK is correct…..if you like shopping so much at U.S chain stores ..you should just move to U.S..LIVEING AND WORKING IN CANADA… SUPPORT CANADIAN STORES..MONEY STAYS IN CANADA …are you aware of home depots tactics …they budget to loose 20 million the first year ,,just so they can make local family business,s out of business …
I have never visited a Target store that was busy. In my many visits to Target, I have only ever purchased 3 items. Would love to be able to shop with Target on-line, as the selection is much better, actually huge, but unfortunately they do not ship to Canada.
we have a target in Amherst Nova scotia.
Nick,
FYI TopShop is a UK company!
I have been told they are building a Target in NewMinas Nova Scotia and what ever you think it is creating jobs where they are needed .
Target coming to Canada does not push as much money into the U.S. as you would think. Target is a very successful corporation that employs over 350,000 people. Further, they pay their employees far better than most retailers (especially that heinous and disgraceful Wal-Mart). Target revenue (of which is 100% American right now) will flow into Canada in the form of jobs, career options, as well as retail competition that will naturally lead to competitive price reduction by other retailers. All three of things will improve the economic landscape in Canada.
I have to agree with Carol. I think online shopping would be just wonderful as I am a stay at home mom of two and it would be so handy. However, as already stated, unfortunately they (Target) does not ship to Canada! :( Us too, go across the border to go shopping. There is more selection, better prices and it is nice to get away for a few days.
all hail target. you friendly canadians can work for us if you behave.
Come on Target..and bring the Vanity Fair line with you.
What’s with all the hostility towards Americans??
Americans have a very positive view of Canadians…”our friendly neighbors up north”
I never realized how much some people there don’t like us until i came up for a few weeks while on vacation.
America is Canada’s best friend on earth I thought the feeling was mutual….
Please do not compare Target to Walmart—as an American (about to move to Canada), Target will be the one store I miss. They have quality merchandise, great prices on both clothing and groceries (if you are fortunate to have a SuperTarget)—and anyway, isn’t the company french originally? I would be thrilled if I could continue to shop there after I move to Montreal :) Their Archer Farms line of food products is excellent, I’ve bought organic items from them, and of course I love the clothing and housewares.
Walmart is the harbinger of evil, I agree with you. Crappy quality, horrible worker’s rights issues, and lousy atmostphere.
I too would love to see Target come to Canada, as well as Ross Dress for Less, Joann’s Fabrics and Crafts, and a host of others oh oh oh and Fred Meyer !
And as far as Canada being so loved by Americans, I’m sorry, but if you tell someone in Bellingham, Washington that you are from Victoria, BC (British Columbia), they don’t have a clue where that is … then we say Vancouver Island … still no clue. Btw – Bellingham is about 25 minutes south of the Canadian/BC border.
anyway that’s just my 2 cents worth (for what its worth)
I am appalled at the anti-American rhetoric. As a Canadian living in the southern US for some years, I have sadly come to realize that Canadians often act superior to make up for their inferiority-complex living next to the US. Bottom line is that the US does retail much better than Canada.
Product selection and prices are only part of the picture. Jobs, benefits, income tax, sales tax & property taxes will benefit Canadians. Oh and stores like Target give millions of dollars away to local community projects. So before you bash companies, do your homework…
For all the closed-minded people – keep shopping wherever you want. But set foot in a Target or any of the other evil “American” stores and you are a hypocrite….Oh by the way, The Bay & Zeller’s are owned by American companies now
to point out that our neighbours don’t know geography beyond their own borders does not make one anti-American. It is merely an observation that we learn far more about them and their country than they learn about us and our country.
And so what if The Bay and Zellers are owned by American companies … so is Tim Horton’s but that certainly doesn’t stop me from getting a good old Canadian double/double. Sheesh !!
Sooooo….after reading all these posts (several of which have nothing to do with Target coming or not…..what’s the verdict? I think Target would be a great addition to our retail scene. I’m Canadian and proud of it…but I have to agree USA does retail right!
Happy Shopping! I’m a shopaholic.
Target is coming to Canada! I just spoke to an employee at the Nanaimo North Centre mall where they’re beginning to renovate two store spaces for it. And for the record, I love Americans! :)
Yes, Target is coming to Northern Ontario too. They are building a store in Sudbury, Ontario right now.
I am pro-USA retail companies. If Canadian retailers were efficient and competative at he Americans we would not be having this argument. I will buy from the retialer with the lowest price – period. And FYI: One of Target’s successful products is their Dwell Home Funishings line which is designed by Christiane Lemieux from Ottawa. Her collections have found a celebrity following, fans include Gwyneth Paltrow, Liv Tyler, Gwen Stefani and Teri Hatcher. She didn’t get her big break from HBC or Sears in Canada – She had to go to the USA.
As a person who has cross-border shopped for many years, I, personally DO NOT wish for Target to come to Canada. If they do, it will be a sad, watered down version of the wonderfullness they have in America. Hello? Look at the other stores that have moved Canada-bound. WalMart, Home Depot, even Costco…all are a pathetic cousin of the marvels of their American counterparts. Canadians, we’re just gonna have to enjoy the shopping excitement down south if we want selection, deals and pure shopping elation.
Actually, it’s correct, a Target store is opening in my city this summer.
Yay! I love target. Great prices and huge selection in kids wear!
Yes, Target is coming to Canada. There is one opening summer 2010 downtown Sudbury Ontario.
There are “Target” stores opening all over Ontario, but it’s not THEE Target, first of all, why hasn’t the American company said anything about their plans of expanding into Canada, and two the logo is very different than the iconic American logo……..
First of all, Target is a nice store, but we DON’t need any, and I mean any American stores in Canada. Especially REPLACING The Bay!
As a Western Canadian, it would be truly FABULOUS for Target to open stores here. I drool everytime I view houseware items on their website; they have phenomenal variety, decent prices, good quality names and merchandise. I am tired of the sloppy cheap and limited choices in the usual Canadian stores; Walmart (crap), The Bay (overpriced crap), Bed Bath & Beyond (super overpriced crap). I shop mostly online and it’s so true that Americans have way better selection in products than us Canucks do. I shop primarily from U.S. online retailers because they provide the best quality and selection. I would shop locally but we have squat for selection. I hope one day soon Target.com will ship to us Canucks.
TARGET IN CANADA? PRAISE THE LORD!!
A dream come true if it happens. :D
Bestbuy isn’t American
I cant wait for Target it is the greatest store EVER!!! It definately beats out Wal-Mart or Zellers ETC. TARGET TARGET TARGET!!!!
Update on the Nanaimo location: livinginnanaimo, found out some new information…our new store will be put into place before December of this year. Yay!
And for those of you dissing Americans, shame on you. They are with our Canadian troops in the war…supporting us all the way. They are like our brothers…so have a little respect. I am sure that much like ourselves with some Americans, they’ve had bad dealings with some Canadians too. That’s no reason to bash them…or their American stores. Target is a great store with low prices. I really wish Ross Dress For Less would move over here…and Jack in the Box. If you think about it this way though, (going back to American stores)…we are practically surrounded by American companies…they have a bigger economy…and I think it’s great they are coming here. It is sad, (I have to say), that Zellers and HBC went American…(as it was Canadian at one time), but it doesn’t mean I hate the store…I just accept that it is happening. What else can you do really?
Anyway, enough said…I love Target…so happy it is coming to our little boring town…just not enough stores to keep interest for me. They’d BETTER bring some cherry coke/7-up and Archer Farms products with them! I want to see cool, new stuff I can’t get in Canada! It’s always cool to try new stuff. Peace out! :P
Nothing would make me happier than to do a 20 minute drive across the city than a 4 hour drive to my closest Target! I love that store – no matter which US city I travel to, I always scope out a Target! And if they bring the store to Canada, the jobs will be for Canadians :D
Either way, I will forever find a way to shop there! With the loonie strong for US shopping, I will give my hard earned bucks where I see fit! There are a few other US stores that could head up North and I would be a happy shopper (Walgreens and Menards)… sorry, but for my money – these are the places I prefer to spend mine!
I find so far living both in the US and Canada that aside from the healthcare issues and the lotto! the US is far superior in almost every way. lower taxes, lower cost of living, cheaper everything!
Dont get me wrong, I love Canada but we Canadians get raped on every single thing we spend money on in comparison, we have crapy selection, heres an example, in WA to renew my licence its $25 in Alberta its $65-70, a gallon of milk in WA I found between $2.11-$3.50 Alberta $3.98-$5.38, oh and heres a good one, a gallon of Gas in WA is $2.75-$3.10 in Alberta where the Oil is! $3.47-$3.90 and lets face it, we cant blame it on the CDN doller anymore its roughly been par since 2007, and we cant blame it on the the economy because WA is one of the more expensive states and Alberta is one of the cheaper ones, if you were to compare BC to WA it would be sickning. So I guess what I am getting at is if the doller is close, taxes are close, and wages are close, why does Canada pay out the ass for ever single thing?
I live in Sudbury, Ontario, and there’s a Target opening soon in my mall. There’s a big-ass poster that says “Summer 2010”. I have no idea if it’s the same target, but it sure looks like it.
So it sounds like target is coming to the Northern part of Canada and not anywhere in GTA area? There’s too much Walmarts here and I think is great to have something different! I don’t want to drive to Sudbury!
@frank, we are the the country of Tax. Now that ON and BC have the HST..is even worse. Our gas went from 94cent per litter to 1.04/L after july 1st and even so, it won’t go down more than 1.00. Yes, we have great medical benifits but how much $$ really goes into it? It’s too much politics!
I just saw that Target is coming to Central City Mall in Surrey, Yeah!!!! When is it coming?
TARGET is a great place to shop for everybody and their markdowns are great deals. They have a great children’s dept along with everything else including some groceries.
I think there’s a Target opening in Sudbury Ontario at the Rainbow mall (downtown). They’ve closed off a part of the mall and the sign and logo are on a temporary wall, it also says they will be opening “summer 2010″… still waiting to see. I looked on-line and can’t find any information about this new store opening.
They ARE coming to Canada. Construction is nearly complete for ours :)
I get mad every time I go shopping in Canada. How can canadians put up with such abuse from retailers? It drives me insane. We love many, many things about this country but I don’t know how people get by with all the rip offs.
Can someone tell me what’s the closest Target to Ottawa?
OMG! I miss Trader Joe’s every time I have to shop for food. Please bring Target and Trader Joe’s to Ottawa.
Target in Canada, what a terrific idea. Not only there items is much more cheaper, but the qaulity of the kids cloths is fantastic. Have you shop in Toronto at stores like Zellers and Wall Mart? what a load of rubbish. Live in Washington DC for awhile and find American stores far more superior to the stores here in Canada. Too limited in choice and too over price for poor quality.
i heard they’re bringing Demi Lovato close in that store soooooo… I want it to be brout to canada
The “Target” store opening in Sudbury, is in fact not the real US Target store. Actually, according to the National Post:
“One wrinkle standing in Target’s way, at least legally, could be getting the rights to its corporate name in Canada. Isaac Benitah, owner of Toronto-based I.N.C. Group, which operates chains such as Fairweather, Randy River, Les Ailes de la Mode and International Clothiers, owns the rights to the Target name and operates a handful of apparel stores in Ontario under the banner.”
So Sudbury is getting a Target store, but it isn’t the one that everyone is expecting. Im also assuming other places like Surrey could be similar to Sudbury.

“In fact, the pending arrival of a Les Ailes Target store to the Rainbow Centre in Sudbury, Ontario may have helped fuel the speculation that the U.S. Target is crossing the border. Rest assured, it’s not our Tar-Jay, says Joe Zito vice president of operations for Vista Hospitality Canada, which manages the mall in question.”
“That rumor has been around forever. There is a store called Target going up and we’ve had a lot of confusion,” he says. “The print and the logo looks very similar, but it’s a trade name that’s been registered in Ontario for 20-25 years, and the rights belong to that corporation.”

All this talk of American retail prowess is great, but they do have less government controls. And look what that brought the world economy … and ask the workers how well they fair against the corporation. Thank you, I love shopping for bargains as much as the next, but Canada appears to still have compassion in MOST of the market place. Now if we could just get stores to adjust pricing with the currency exchange …
What’s the address of the target in amherst, nova scotia?
Just confirmed that it is not the American Target as there is a Canadian chain using that name and that’s why the Americans can’t set up in Canada.
“Looking for growth beyond the U.S. makes sense for Target, and Canada is a logical next step with its similar customer base, a shared language and border, and the experience of the many retailers that have successfully gone before to draw from. But it’s also out of character for this very cautious retailer and its slow domestic growth is a good example of this tentative tendency.
There are also some legal hurdles to attend to first, namely wresting its very name from another retail store. Les Ailes De La Mode Inc. operates stores under the Target name, with a very similar logo, in Canada already. In fact, the pending arrival of a Les Ailes Target store to the Rainbow Centre in Sudbury, Ontario may have helped fuel the speculation that the U.S. Target is crossing the border. Rest assured, it’s not our Tar-Jay, says Joe Zito vice president of operations for Vista Hospitality Canada, which manages the mall in question.
“That rumor has been around forever. There is a store called Target going up and we’ve had a lot of confusion,” he says. “The print and the logo looks very similar, but it’s a trade name that’s been registered in Ontario for 20-25 years, and the rights belong to that corporation. Similarly, there’s a Target discount chain in Australia even more like the U.S. retailer than Les Ailes, which sells only apparel and fashion items under the Target banner.
This wouldn’t be the first time talk of Target expanding to Canada has been bandied about. Whenever U.S. sales falter companies start preaching International expansion; in this Target is not alone. But Canada’s Financial Post cites anonymous sources close to the company who say the Target is closer to securing sites than ever before.

Come to Canada, I think Target would do well here!
I have heard over and over again on our local radio station that Target will be opening up a store in Nanaimo, BC. When are you slotted to open. I’m looking forward to shopping in your store.
Yeah! There’s a Target opening up at the mall here in Nanaimo,BC. I’m stoked :]
I only want target to come to Canada because of domo’s :P
I was disappointed to read the anti-American posts above. In reference to the Americans not knowing Canadian cities & provinces, I have noticed the same thing in reverse. Many times I have been asked where I’m from, I say “Oregon” many people have said “I don’t know where that is”. I’m visiting BC, we are not that far away.
I see a lot of good similarities; people are friendly, scenery is beautiful, food is good. I look forward to many return trips to this wonderful Country.
The original reason I read this thread: I’m trying to find a “one stop shop” similar to Target in BC. I need to purchase school supplies, home supplies, medical supplies and snacks. Right now it looks like I need to visit 3-4 stores which is ok. What I’m really missing are the “outlet malls” for discounted name brand clothes and shoes.
I shop Target all the time when I go to the US. I don’t understand why they don’t ship to Canada. Just discovered that JC Penny will ship to Canada, or ship to a store in the US. Wanted to order something online from Target yesterday and see if they would ship to a store, but alas they would not.
If they did come to Canada, I could say that Zellers would like slide into oblivion.
But as someone said, the rumour has been circulating for months. They would be better off trying the online shipping first to see Cdn response.
What’s this about one in NS? If they were going to come to Canada (no offence) but why would they start on the east coast, or at least why not start in Halifax.
Sorry but you are wrong Target is opening a store in Surrey BC, this fall. The interior constuction is almost complete in Central City Mall.
Being an American…living in Canada, i am so for Target coming here!!! Who would think that living in a city of a couple 100 thousand people you would NOT be able to find what you are lookng for on a consistant basis. Shopping wise. It is ridiculous!!! My collage town of 50 thousand people had MUCH MUCH more shopping than here.
As far as the blah blah blah about “American” stores coming here. I’m so sick of closed minded people!!!! American or Canadian.
Folks, it’s not about buying Canadian…most of the “Canadian” stores get almost all products from China. It’s not “Canadian” at all, and that’s not where the money is going- it’s going overseas.
Target in Canada! What a retail opportunity! Finally someone who knows how to finish off what’s left of any paltry home-grown shopping experience. Moreover, for years Canadian small business has screwed the worker here by supporting one conservative government after another who condon such craziness as an $8 per hour minimum wage like in BC. Let the class warfare begin.
I don’t spend a dime here. I live 36 miles from the US border & am there every weekend. And like the Mulroney era before with the implimentation of the GST…I vote with my feet often on the existing HST. So good luck to Target coming here but I’ll still frequent their many fine stores in Washington State. Some of the clerks there even speak Canadian, eh!
First of all both Target and Best Buy are MINNESOTA companies, therefore pretty much Canadian in most American’s viewpoint! ;)
And Target is trying to expand in Canada, but they are having a dispute with
Toronto fashion merchant Isaac Benitah’s use of the Target name.
Benitah acquired Canadian rights to the name from failing retailer Dylex in 2001.

US retailers do indeed do retail the best! We go to Florida every summer and I do lots of shopping there for clothes and shoes, and agree that a TARGET or even a ROSS store would be FANTASTIC. And yes Zellers would definitely disappear with Target in the vicinity…but seriously have you shopped at Zellers lately. The staff is almost never helpful and it looks like HBC has just about completely forgotten the chain! As for the BAY, they need a healthy dose of competition…yes they have some quality stuff but their prices are RIDICULOUS. And as for shopping Canadian…when HBC WAS Canadian…I went out of my way to shop there and shop for Canadian goods…UNFORTUNATELY even when they were Canadian it was hard to find anything Canadian in their stores.
As for my American neighbours…they are fantastic…always friendly and willing to help. As for their lack of knowledge…most Canadians don’t know their OWN geography much less the US’! My vote is for the real TARGET to PLEASE come to Quebec! I know…the French thing is a problem… but we love to spend our MONEY!
This being true is almost confirmed now. Tar-Jay has store number ideas for here and apparently has a rollout plan of 200 stores or less. But there’s a problem: The Target name.
It’s sad. The greatest American retailer in the world might get shut off because of Isaac Benitah using the name for a lame store it can’t even compare to. :( I hope Target wins the rights to the name and defeats Benitah. I for one am boycotting his Target stores effective immediately, to encourage Tar-Jay. After all, the stores are so damn different in terms of size and type. Target even has the damned bullseye, which would helpe them even more (Benitah has no logo)
The Rainbow Centre downtown Sudbury has a sign that says
“Target coming soon”.
So Target is coming to Canada.
and I can’t wait for it to open.
I live in Sudbury, Ontario and I was at one of our local malls called the Rainbow Center, and to much of my surprise they are putting in a Target Store. Cool!
This is directed at “Sudbury” and “Kim”,
I also live in Sudbury, just up off Notre Dame in behind St.Jean de Brebeuf. I did a bit of research on this and found out this is NOT the american Target owned by Target Corp. Rather, the name and logo are registered in Canada by Les Ailes De La Mode Inc., and have been so for over 25 years. The location opening in the city centre is owned by Les Ailes. Sorry to burst your bubble.
Although if I may add that Target Corp has said it is CONSIDERING expanding into Canada after at least 3 years, so thats a little ways away. Also, the above mentioned with the name and logo already taken in Canada would be a bit of a legal battle I’d think.
Absolutely bring Target and every other American retailer to Canada. If our so called Canadian retailers (which sell goods made everywhere from around the world) can’t compete by stepping up their service, lowering their prices, and dropping the attitude, then tough cookies….they will go under. It’s all about competition and what’s good for us (the consumer) not the already rich Canadian companies which hold a monopoly. If you fear so called “Americanization” in Canada, then you have insecurity issues as a Canadian and any American store opening up here is the least of you problems…a proud Canadian
Target is opening in Sudbury, Ont. on November 29, 2010 in the Rainbow Center on Elm St. Heard it on the local radio station. Nov 23, 2010.
I have worked for the for over 20 years …I think Target should come to Canada and buy ouy Zellers ….zeller is a company that is not good to there worker….The customer service at Zellers sucks …There is not amyone to help customers,,, And the company is not doing good at all…I think they got too many people working for then at the top …Because if you want good services you need to be good to your worker… If you are not happy going to work for HBC and Zellers …I think the company should let some people go starding from the top…They have alot of buyer for the company and alot of time they are setting on there ass doing nothing ,,,I would be so happy seeing Zellers gone and Target here to help the people here in Canada because zellers is not giving good customer service ….Let target take over zeller would be good thing ….We need help and maybe Target is the company to help …So Target WELCOME TO CANADA THANKS
Target is open in Sudbury Ontario as of today, November 29th, 2010!
I am always surprised at the Canadian sentiment towards American chains. I remember the people who would avoid Starbucks and head down the street to Second Cup…yet Starbucks offered it’s Canadian employees full benefits, decent wage and opportunity for management positions. It is the same with Target, they will donate to the community and offer fair employment to many Canadians. Why do we avoid the US stores yet flock like sheep to the Swedish conglomerates like IKEA and H&M? Makes no sense. Absolutely silly and hypocritical. If you want to support Canadian business then get out there and create something interesting and we will come. Do you realize The Bay(HBC) just started to offer online shopping and only sell a handful of things? Drives me crazy. Thank God there are US retailers out there who care about customer service!!!
Let all the people who bash U.S. companies who come to Canada and Chinese imports give us an inventory of what they own and where it came from. Fact is we are in a global economy and must learn to compete. If trade between Canada and the U.S. was suddenly stopped guess who the big loser would be. Canadians have the opportunity to compete and in many cases do so very well Canadian Tire and Giant Tiger being two good examples. We are a free enterprise society and as a slightly to the right self employed retailer myself I am glad of it.
The Canadian Box stores don’t know how to compete nor do they even try to compete. Like the Hudson Bay Company and Eatons. The HBC is a prime example of being a Company that has had a Monopoly (it Was a Monopoly) for about 300 years and having zero competition what so ever.
Zellers’ idea of competing against wal-mart is jacking up their prices then closing an hour earlier than wal-mart does. And working for Zellers is no different from Wal-mart, you’re still getting paid minimum wage & part time! Also people should remember that Canadian Companies export a lot of stuff to the United States and world wide! I have worked at places that have exported to China, India and even Africa. The whole anti-America thing is very juvenille and questionable. Do you have any idea how domestic forgein companies often treat their workers? There are far worse countries than America for gods sake.
International Trade and free trade is a good thing. Give companies more initiative to do a good job and produce better products. Those who fail to adapt die, that’s evolution. If you don’t want to compete you probably are into communism and look what happened to the Soviet Union.
Target IS coming to Canada. They are opening in Edmonton City Center sometime in 2011.
Good news Canucks! Target rumor has it we will be headed your way in 2012! I’ve worked as a manager for target for 5 yrs, it is a GREAT company to work for! They have great insurance that includes domestic partners, they match your 401k up to 5% and donate millions of dollars every year to education and community projects. Its going to mean jobs for you guys, and I’ve already put my name on the list to transfer when it gets greenlit. (Sorry but they are going to need seasoned people to train everyone so im sure some of us yanks will be headed your way) and what’s with all the american haters?! I grew up an hour from montreal, I have a lot of canadian friends and I would love to live there! I tell all my friends how great you guys are, and then I read stuff like this and im like whoa wth?!
Oh, dear. “Target Employee”? Really now, how convincing. *sarcasm*
Proof or it’s fake. Besides, aren’t you guys stuck in a legal battle?
I will be happy if a Target comes to Canada…specifically Calgary! I’ve looked online there and the products look neat and for a great price.
I have no problem whatsoever with American companies…I love WalMart, Best Buy and Costco. Why wouldn’t you? Explain a Canadian company that offers the same items for equal price or quality.
Actually…name a Canadian company that’s even CANADIAN!
bring this to Montreal. Although, the french people will probably not like it, and stick to their Zellers.
I understand that Target stores do not support any Military veterans Programs, such as the United States Marine veterans volunteer programs ,The Australian Defense Forces,”Vietnamese Veterans Association”. or any other United Nations peace, or any programs for disabled veterans, their families or refugees from war zones. They are are a French company. They would not let The Salvation Army ring their bells outside their stores, nor would they let The US marines collect for “Toys For Tots”.They are not in Canada yet, perhaps in 2-3 Years. We don’t want them in our Country with that attitute. Target Stores of France, “STAY HOME”. “COMPRENEZ VOUS”. We need no more crap in Canada. A Canadian who speaks for most of all the Armed Forces personnel, veterans and their families and friends in the western world (Democratic).Target stay out of Canada as we will all boycott you and your unsavory attitude.
Don’t buy their clothes. We bought some size 10 clothes for my 9 years old with should be already one size bigger but they fit tight to his body like a size 7. There’s more, after the first regular wash, the size 10 clothes shrunk to fit a 6 years old boy. They just import directly from China without any internal fashion designer to check the clothes.
It’s the canadian government submining their own economy. Everything is cheaper in the States, including goods manufactured in Canada. How can that be possible?
So happy shopping in the US!
“isn’t the company french originally?”
no, it is based out of Minneapolis, Minnesota
They’re heeere!
Its about time!!! HORRAY for Target!!!
We have been shopping at Zellers for over 50 years ,first as a child and then with my own fmaily and now with grand
childre now. We do not want to loose Zellers. And the last thing we need is another big box store. Wasnt walmart enough and we have all heard how they treat their employees.
Gregg Steinhafel is the CEO of Target. We do not want you here, this is our country, not just a new place for you to compete with another big box store.
Darlin Bonchek
When you come TARGET pretty , pretty , pretty please bring
everything ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
more then the U.S.A. has!!!! THANKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-Miranda Monahan
Target is awesome! Cleaner than Walmart and they treat their employees 1000 times better. Stay away from Walmart and embrace Target! I am Canadian and live in the US. I may consider moving back now that Target will be in Canada.
Soon the US will take over Canada.
It’s about time. I wanted Target in Canada. I went to one in the U.S. and i already fell in love with Target, especially brand new $20 box sets!!! But, i think they’ll raise the prices in canada, though it might not be a lot. Thanks Target! :)
Sure hope if they come to Canada they WILL ALLOW Salvation Army Bell Ringers not like in the U.S. where this is NOT ALLOWED!! Shameful.
people are complaining about the US taking over canada/ really we have crappy stores other than the US stores, you complain but i bet shop at walmart, costco and best buy.. damn grow up
HA! Target IS coming to Canada!
biting your tongue now arn’t you sblackadder?
see there is a difference but multi million dollar companies are hush hush about their business plans. clearly they were in negotiation and probably were for about a year. they were actually considering taking over a few other companies but lastly they decided on zellers. im excited. sure its putting money towards america but at the same time arn’t we getting money? its setting up millions of jobs for canadian workers. zellers blows. walamart and target are amazing. if a canadian company could have stores like walmart and target i would shop there for sure but we dont, so we need their help.
I work for zellers and having a new company take over is good but at the same time it sucks because no one said all zellers staff would be losing their job over it. Thats right. Target wants to fire everyone and hire new staff to fut the standards of their company…..booooo is what I say to that.
Actually despite what the people of the Toronto area think Target is not only coming to Canada but it is already here… they have already opened there first location in the Rainbow Centre in Sudbury.
I am truly disappointed at how many ignorant Canadians there are on here. “Americans will soon be taking over the whole country” blah, blah, blah. As others have stated, it is not just another ploy for Americans to make more money or take over, as Canada will benefit greatly. It goes both ways; if you want to boycott American retail stores, maybe we shouldn’t purchase lobsters from Nova Scotia? And, the last time I was in New York city, guess what I saw; a CANADIAN BASED Tim Hortons that took over a Dunkin Donuts!!! And was I upset and in fear of the Canadians taking over the country, no, because that’s business, and they will be taking over more in the future. In reference to the person who commented that alot of Americans do not know where or what Vancouver is, not all Canadians are familiar with all states in the U.S. either. Please do not misunderstand, as I have many Canadian friends, and they love me “despite” being American; I just make sure to aquaint myself with the educated ones…
I would like to see a Target store come to Victoria,B.C. I have shopped in target stores in Washington and Oregan. I would like very much for a Target store to take over the Zellers store here in Victoria, the sooner, the better.
Hi.
My name is Wyma Vanderlinden, and I heard you will be taking over the Zellers Outlet in Newmarket,Ontario. I would like to apply for a job with you. I have been in sales for 12 years and average about 600,000 dollars a year. I have heard so much about your store and your Merchandise I know we are going to enjoy you here. please tell me how to apply, I have other qualifications in other services as well. Thanks.Hope to hear from you soon.
To the naysayer at the top, I’ve got to inform you that as an employee of Target, they are in fact, going to Canada. Our head of HR announced it about 3 days after you posted that comment. If you are going to correct someone in a condescending manner, at least be right.
well we just went to target what junk compared to what they sell in the united states our canadian dollar rises where are the deals checked the target web site for the united states the target here in canada does not sell what they sell in the united states check it out for yourself what a rip off on the canadian people
Target is open at Warden & Eglinton in toronto
I think its cool we are getting a Target but others are true if u luv the store so much then move to the states
I’m so disappointed the Target is coming to Canada – those big American box stores do more harm than we can ever imagine (Lowe’s, David’s Bridal, etc).People just want stuff as cheap as they can get it, and they don’t care who gets exploited in the process. Wal-mart’s tag from their commercials is “Save money. Live better,” but the question I have to ask is who lives better? The kids in Bangladesh? Yeah right. Have we no pride Canada? Do we care no longer about our own economy? Because another American box store will hurt our own local businesses. I am a university student and I have managed to boycott Wal-mart my whole life. They are messy, poor quality stores. We should all learn to care more not only about Canada’s economy and integrity, but also about our fellow neighbour.
It’s true it’s comin to Canada go to target.ca it is comin in 2013
i am looking for a target in Hamilton Canada ???
I am so excited to have TARGET coming to HAMILTON, WATERLOO etc all over ONTARIO, this is fabulous news. I hope the merchandise is the same as it is in the STATES! Walmart has terrible stuff and never has enough of anything on sale! I have given Walmart so many tries, but I end up wasting gas getting there…
LET’s hope Target does not get “Canadianized”, and maintains its’ quality and merchandise that we know and love. This will also allow for better prices for us and competition…with HST on EVERYTHING, we need a deal!
YAHHHOOOOOOO Target I welcome you to ONTARIO!
and YES it is coming to Hamilton, two locations!
I just want to say Welcome, a nice change from Walmart. Hope that they hire people with manners and know customer service means money in the bank. I have never gone cross boarder shopping, waste of time, money and gas. The savings it would generate is not worth the hassle
Is this the chain store who sponcers Mr.PROCHAZKA?
If so I am not interested.
Thanks
Rick
100% true Target is coming into Canada, Zellers leases are up and they are pretty much up for grabs. Target is buying 220 Zellers stores across Canada and the stores that don’t get chosen for the new Target lease, will be bought out by other interested Candidates. From what it sounds like, no more Zellers..and good riddance. Expect to see changes in 2012, people!
The same Company that owns Target owns Zellers and Target bought the right to last remaining Zeller’s stores across Canada something like 500 stores. Most are being torn down while the rest the more profitable locations will be turned into Target stores. I live in Charlottetown, P.E.I. . Smallest province in Canada, and we’re getting 1 sometime next year, they’re suppose to start construction on the old Zellers slightly before/after x-mas. We’re also getting Gap, another super walmart, and an entire new mall built, we recently got bed bath and beyond, and 1 superwalmart. I’d like to see a costco here and bestbuy, I hate futureshop.
Target is coming to and i know that they have just purchased the Zellers Company.
I live in Montreal.
one day I went to Walmart for some shoes and the original $20.00 price tag that comes with the shoes was removed and a $25.00 Walmart price tag was placed on.
here in Montreal it’s roll on not roll back. SO COME ON TARGET TO MONTREAL
I like zellers to stay why change I perfer Zellers thankyou
oct 11.2011 at 3:46 Change is good but Zellers was good for me to but prices being better thats what we all need save save money bring it thats all i have to say
oct 11 2011 at 3:51pm Looking forward to the change
I heard you Target Store is comming to Stephenville,Newfoundland.I was wondering if this is true.
Im sure if you do come out here you will be welcomed.
I was a little disappointed to here that Target was coming to Canada. Our Canadian Retailers are not doing enough to hold onto their brand. Advertising, promotions, drawing customers into their locations are the key. As usual when it comes to managing companies Canadians do it pooring. Take a look at Rona. Still trying to keep its head above water. They have the same products as Home Depot but their staff lack the knowledge, experience and customer service. Home Depot trains, changes, updates and consistently keeps making changes to keep the brand fresh. Rona does not have the drive or commitment needed to be successful. I do shop at Rona and will not shop at Depot. Keep it Canadian.
Dave
Targets have built their distibution centre in cornwall which is freggin huge, and it sit’s right by the Wal-mart distibution centre, but only three times the size I have seen it and wow ya.
You seem to be quite celebratory about a corporation that is insinuating itself into the cultural fabric of this Canadian community without any sensibility regarding nor sensitivity to the needs of the people who actually live and shop in the affected communities. Zellers stores offer diner service to customers, many of whom are elderly and can make use of a wholesome, well prepared yet a basic meal; where they can sit down and commute with their neighbours and people similar to themselves. The Target is instead selling a few measly square feet to Starbuck’s whose customer base is skewed much younger than the current clientele. These people will have nowhere to go and I hope, no place to shop. Target’s insensitivity to the neighbourhood is too typical and too evil to endure.
