Fabric giant King Textiles is moving to make way for a condo development
Grandmothers, design students, fashion designers, Etsy shop owners and interior decorators (to name a few) will be saddened to note that King Textiles is moving at the end of July to make way for what it describes as “yet another condo development.” Currently, the business operates in a 22,000-square-foot space at 445 Richmond Street West, but it will downsize significantly at its new location at 161 Spadina Avenue. For the company, it’s presumably an annoyance, but for the consumer, it means that there’s a sale, with fabric, trim, upholstery, drapery hardware, zippers and buttons for 50 to 90 per cent off. It’s the perfect opportunity to cheaply start a new project, like making a pair of paisley culottes or designing a sheer pink canopy cover with glass bead fringe for a princess bed. Such a big sale on fabric means there’s going to be a lot of bulk buying and a lot of experimenting mistakes.
