15 Toronto houses and condos that were actually worth the money in 2014

The economics of Toronto real estate in 2014 meant even completely average places could (and frequently did) sell for seven-figure sums. Despite all the craziness, though, some homes that hit the market this year truly did justify their often-astronomical prices. Over the course of 2014, we documented dozens of these standout properties as part of our recurring Sale of the Week, Condo of the Week and House of the Week features. Here, we’ve collected 15 of the most beautiful, most spacious and most jealousy-inducing of those homes in one photo gallery. You may not be able to afford them, but you can spend a few hours gawking at them. And that’s not nothing.

Unusual wall treatments and an ultra-sleek kitchen make this particular property a standout.

This place proves lightness and elegance can be had without all the glass. The proximity to Queen West is a bonus.

The house—at least as decorated by its former owners—is like a museum of mid-century home design.

The best part, though, is the backyard, where a large patio and a saltwater pool overlook a nearby ravine.

The pair (who were a couple, at a time when lesbian relationships weren't commonplace) would throw parties for Group of Seven painters and other friends of theirs. The property's pedigree is only part of the appeal here, though: the massive living room has a vaulted ceiling and the kitchen is resplendently gloomy.

The house came with a whole other house in its backyard. The history of the two properties—both of them nicely renovated—is a little complicated, but the upshot is that some buyer got a contemporary home and a spare rental property at the stroke of a pen. Deals like that are hard to come by.
