Although espresso seems to be this city’s caffeinated drink of choice, yerba maté should not be overlooked—it’s a strong loose-leaf tea with less caffeine than your average cup of java. While it can be enjoyed in solitude, the South American drink is all about companionship: sippers drink it through a metal straw called a bombilla out of a communal gourd. Owners Silvio Rodriguez and Estela Velasco-Cortes are happy to teach Torontonians the ways of the gourd. They also offer house-made snacks like pascualina (spinach tarts), empanadas and alfajores (cookies) that don’t overwhelm with sweetness. Bags of yerba maté and gourds with bombillas are for sale, and there is a full coffee menu.
