Reintroducing: the Thompson Diner, the restaurant formerly known as The Counter
The Counter, the casual 24-hour diner at the Thompson Hotel, is no more—not because it’s gone out of business or been shut down, but due to a name change. The restaurant is now known as the Thompson Diner due to a naming dispute, although the management declined to elaborate. No changes to the staff or atmosphere have been reported, but apparently the fear of litigation has inspired a new cheeseburger. Read the entire story [Post City] »
“No changes to the staff or atmosphere…”
You’ve missed the story here, TL.
Why no mention of the change in the Lobby Bar?
Thompson took it over from Scarpetta, and fired all the staff—7 people in total—not so lucky as their Counter counterparts. As for atmosphere, lots of loud DJs and LED lights. I guess that’s how you attract King Westers…
Hope they have better food now. The Counter was a disappointment.
When the Thompson bar first opened, I thought it would be my new regular hang-out spot. I went fairly often in the early days and was very much impressed by one of the managers there. But then I stayed at the hotel one weekend, and I found the overall customer service dreadful, including the most unwelcoming, snooty check-in desk staff I’ve ever encountered – and I’ve lodged at some of the best hotels in the world. Now I don’t even bother going there – there are plenty of other places to spend my dosh that treat me well – the Ritz, for example! I thought it was going to be a cool classy NYC-style spot, but as the other commenter hinted, sounds like it’s going to become the same as any other King West bar/club – nothing special.
Yes we knew and very much liked the very friendly staff that got the axe by scapetta. They didn’t deserve it. Scarpetta is new in town, but are soon to learn that a pretty location means nothing to torontonians. Kindness to ones employees and a good and affordable menu is the mainstay of success. See the Wellington pub for an example. Hype and attitude is meaningless here. This us why your patio was empty all summer. Success surrounds you Scarpetta. Learn.
They should have changed the kitchen staff and menu as the food at the Counter / Thompson is the absolute worst diner food in the city.
