The Corner House is basically the antithesis to Toronto’s never-ending parade of sleek new eateries. It’s housed in a quaint cottage at the base of Casa Loma and chef Herbert Barnsteiner’s menu sticks to traditional French and Italian standards, like lobster bisque and wild mushroom risotto. Unsurprisingly, the little house has been a go-to spot for romantic tête-à-têtes and special occasions for well over a decade. Now, Barnsteiner and his wife Michelle have sold the business.

“We’ve been busier than ever, but we decided it was time to move on to a new project,” explains Michelle. “We want to thank all our regulars for their generosity and unique support. We’re moving on to something new, so we look forward to seeing them again soon.”

The Barnsteiners’ new project is still in the early planning stages, but Michelle confirms that it will definitely be food-related. As for The Corner House, it serves its final meal to the public on February 28. Part of the night’s proceeds will go to food-rescue program Second Harvest.
