City council approves slight loosening of street food rules
Get ready for prepackaged nuts: Toronto city council voted today to approve some changes to street food vending regulations that will allow a whack of new types of food to be sold on the city’s hot dog carts. The selection, however, is not exactly inspiring. Think prepackaged cut fruits and vegetables; bagels with individual serving containers of butter, margarine, peanut butter or jam; prepackaged salads containing only vegetables and/or fruit; prepackaged tabbouleh and pita; soups; pre-cooked veggie burgers; and coffee and tea. The liberalization of food truck rules, meanwhile, will have to wait until at least November, when a staff report is expected. Welcome to the brave new world of Toronto street food! [Toronto Star]
Anyone find it funny that the city’s encouraging the sale of nuts on street carts when there are a fair # of people with nut allergies.
considering that the city’s (supposedly) driven by health concerns, this is stupidly beyond stupid.
Just let people operate food trucks already.
Doesn’t it make sense that if you have a peanut allergy then JUST DON’T EAT THE NUTS.
Whatever happened to personal responsibility?
Until the Board Of Health steps up the frequency of inspection of street “food” carts I will brown bag it..the recent article in the The Star about dead mice, mouse feces, etc. found in one owner’s carts doesn’t exude a high measure of confidence. Isolated incident, possibly, but reports of pestilence are usually presented as isolated incidents.
