In an effort to shed its reputation as “that place where celebrities eat breakfast during TIFF because they don’t know any better,” Trump Tower’s 31st-floor restaurant—which currently looks a bit like a very luxurious villain’s lair, circa 1984ish—is getting a makeover. The condo-hotel’s culinary operations were taken over last December by Oliver & Bonacini Restaurants (the group behind Canoe, Jump, Luma and Auberge du Pommier) and Charles Khabouth’s company INK Entertainment, which owns half of King West. According to the Star, Trump will close for a week at the end of August; then, on August 28, it will make its public debut as America, a softer, cooler, more laid-back restaurant with a “modern American” menu designed by O&B executive chef Anthony Walsh. (Suits, the Trump’s downstairs bar, is also getting a new persona—it will be reborn as The Calvin.) A lot of money is going into the transformation: Khabouth told the Star that over $100,000 was spent on fabrics alone.
