What’s on the menu at Madame Boeuf, an outdoor burger joint and flea market behind Bar Begonia

Name: Madame Boeuf and Flea
Contact: 252 Dupont St., madameboeuf.com, @madameboeufandflea
Neighbourhood: The Annex
Owners: Anthony Rose
In the kitchen: Kevin Gilmour and Aaron Hallam

The food

A “stupid-simple” (Rose’s words, not ours) backyard barbecue menu of burgers, cheese fries, shrimp cocktail and Ed’s Real Scoop ice cream (in scoop, float or slushie form). “This was always the original idea,” Rose says. “Rose and Sons has Big Crow, Fat Pasha has Schmaltz and Bar Begonia has Madame Boeuf.”

Fries with house-made cheese sauce. $8.

Keeping things summery, there’s shrimp cocktail. $15.

The Banquet Burger with lettuce, tomato, onion, cheese and, of course, bacon. $12.99.

And the joint’s eponymous burger—the only French-inspired thing on the short menu—topped with a whole whack of Roquefort, pickled mushrooms and a mushroom purée. $15.99.

Two scoops of Ed’s Real Scoop ice cream (Tahitian vanilla, chocolate chocolate or burnt marshmallow). $3.50.
The drinks

Beer, wine, a few summery cocktails on tap and boozy slushies, including one made with rosé (it’s called “frozé” because of course it is). For the kids: pop, floats and non-boozy slushies.

To drink, there are margaritas, like this one here made with Tromba.

And G&Ts made with house-made tonic.

A Coke float made with vanilla ice cream. There’s a root beer one, too. $5.49.

Guests place orders at the shipping container bar counter and then seat themselves. They’ll be called when their order is up.
The space

Complete with a shipping container kitchen, picnic tables and a bocce ball court—the seasonal spot wouldn’t be out of place in cottage country. And on the last Saturday of every month, Madame Boeuf turns into a flea market. The current vendor lineup includes Badass Breads, Poppies, The Beguiling and Smash. There’ll also be vinyl for sale (which customers can try before they buy), coffee from Ezra’s Pound and baked goods from Wilder and Rose.

Madame Boeuf was created by Toronto artist Marta Mckenzie. “I wanted a big, bodacious, beautiful woman eating or holding a hamburger,” Rose says. “And she nailed it.”

The space is mostly covered, so there’s protection from summer’s too-hot sun (or too-wet rain).

Rose made these two tables out of wooden pallets. His son decorated the blue one in the back.

There’s a bocce ball court.

And there’s cornhole, too. (Because why call it beanbag toss when you can call it cornhole?) Anthony’s 11-year-old son picked out the Tupac poster. Cool kid.

Rose and some Grateful Dead bears.
