Laura Secord returns to Canadian ownership

After more than 20 years, Laura Secord is back in Canadian hands after Quebec-based chocolatier Nutriart bought the company for $20 million from private U.S. investors.

Laura Secord, named after the woman who is immortalized in those Heritage commercials for warning the British and Canadian troops about an American invasion during the War of 1812, plans to increase chocolate production at Nutriart’s plant in Quebec City and introduce such “healthy” products as chocolates that contain fruit and cocoa that is loaded with antioxidants. Chief retail officer Raj Sharma admitted that Laura Secord has struggled in recent years; in an attempt to attract customers, the company will test coffee in five stores and frozen yogurt in four.

We hope the Superkid ice cream will not be affected by this acquisition.
