Glory Hole Doughnuts turns to crowdfunding to help launch its new Parkdale shop
The, ahem, creatively named Glory Hole Doughnuts is looking to get a permanent storefront in Parkdale soon, but before that can happen, baker Ashley Jacot De Boinod hopes lovers of meat-laden doughnuts will help her drum up the $15,000 needed to turn a former beauty salon at 1596 Queen Street West into her doughnut headquarters. Jacot De Boinod’s treats are ambitious (in addition to the staple maple bacon, there’s a fried chicken and waffles doughnut as well as peanut butter and grape jelly one), and have been gobbled up at places like 416 Snack Bar and Thor Espresso Bar. Jacot De Boinod’s pitch is currently up on Kickstarter clone precursor Indiegogo—her project’s funders will receive goodies like tickets to the soft launch party and a free doughnut, and the store will also feature a whole wall devoted to their generosity. At last count, fans have chipped in $1,827, and the campaign will be accepting funds until June 26. Check out Glory Hole’s pitch [Indiegogo] »
While I applaud this woman for her spunk, it wouldn’t be easy for me to hand over my cash, with all the other more “life and death” charities out there. Its pretty hard for me to donate to someone opening a donut shop vs. giving to a food bank/United Way, etc. I know its apples and oranges, but we all only have so much money to donate. Good luck to her, though and I suppose the idea is a good one. Perhaps she should start hitting up rich folks personally, which is what university students do, with some success.
Kickstarter et al aren’t really supposed to be dontations, you’re supporting a comopany and getting something back in exchange.
@Steve — The problem is, in this case, the perks are not at all commensurate with what you’re giving (25 bucks for one doughnut? 100 for a dozen??) so it feels more like a donation than anything else.
I don’t understand, why would you sign a lease to a new store but not have the money to pay for it? This seems like a very bad business plan. If they started selling product instead of asking for money, they would probably make the money they need.
This rockasilly rebel needs to set-up shop inside Wicked.
The owner should have more regard for new neigbours, the 5 ton truck delivery blocked the alley for half hour, while I heard her tell the truck driver that I didnt matter because I was in the wrong wanting to go through the alley on my bike the wrong way, yet she could block the alley… well 4 cars had to turn around and 2 pedestrians had to squeeze by during that time while she chatted about non-issue stuff to the driver, the actual delvery should have only taken about 5 minutes.
Way to go new neighbour, I dont think this place will last.
She will go down (pardon the pun) in the history books as one having the worst business sense in Toronto.
Glory Hole Donute RIP
I was searching for porn and found a donut shop. . .yuck!
They need to figure out a better system of doing things. I’ve made the trip few times and unfortunately got nothing more than a coffee because they were sold out of doughnuts – this was early in the day too, an hour after opening. I also witnessed around $100 worth of business walk out the door because there was no product. I get that she’s at it alone and its still very new but perhaps she just isn’t ready for it to be open.
I also followed their process of checking twitter to see if they have any doughnuts. The few times I made the trip, there was no mention of them being sold out but SURPRISE they didn’t have any.
I wanted to like it there really badly but they left a bitter taste in my mouth. I think she needs someone who deals with supply chain management or someone with restaurant business experience to help her, otherwise I’m afraid she may not last much longer.
WORST DOUGHNUT SHOP IN TORONTO QUEEN STREET WEST. DEFINATELY NOT THE BEST DOUGHNUT SHOP IN TORONTO. THE DONUTS ARE BIG AND MAKE YOU FEEL LIKE DIARRHEA AFTER EATING THEM. THE INGREDIENTS ARE CHEAP QUALITY AND TO TOP THINGS OFF, THEY ARE ALWAYSSSSSSSS OUT OF DOUGHNUTS. HOW CAN YOU RUN A DONUT SHOP AND CONSTANTLY BE OUT OF DONUTS WHEN THATS THE ONLY THING YOU SELL???? GOT TO BE KIDDING ME. SHE CLEARLY HAS NO BUSINESS MENTALITY, THIS PLACE IS A SHAME BECAUSE IT WILL END UP GOING UNDER BECAUSE OF A LACK OF BUSINESS SKILLS. SOME PEOPLE ARE JUST NOT FIT TO RUN A BUSINESS. A DONUT SHOP IN TORONTO AND YOU ARE ALWAYS OUT OF DONUTS, LIKE F##K, GET YOUR SH#T TOGETHER, THEY ONLY HAVE LIKE 3 DOZEN DONUTS OUT AT ONCE, LIKE TIM HORTONS SELLS 3 DOZEN DONUTS IN A MATTER OF MINUTES AND THIS LADY THINKS 3 DOZEN DONUTS WILL LAST AN ENTIRE DAY, LIKE REALLY????? YOU PLAN ON MAKING A LIVING SELLING 3 DOZEN DONUTS A DAY? THIS BUSINESS OWNERS OF GLORY HOLE DOUGHNUTS ARE REALLLLYYYYYY DUMB!
