Final throes: Where to find a table during the last weekend of Summerlicious

Final throes: Where to find a table during the last weekend of Summerlicious

The dog days of Summerlicious are here, and with reservations down at top restaurants across the city, many tables are sitting empty at some of the city’s finest spots. This might be the first and last time anyone will be able to walk into North 44 without a reservation, eat for under $50, and walk right out. After the jump, all a hungry diner needs to know about how to nab a last-minute seat at the 10 most popular restaurants from our Best of Summerlicious list.

AUBERGE DU POMMIER
Oliver and Bonacini’s eldest and dearest is still accepting reservations throughout the weekend. Walk-ins are accepted but not encouraged: they strongly recommend calling in advance. What Torontonian of sound mind would just show up at Don Mills and Yonge on a whim anyway?

BATIFOLE
Friday night is booked, but the best French restaurant in Old Chinatown still has over a dozen seats available after 8:30 on Saturday. Sunday is relatively free, so Riverdalians can try strolling straight in.

BYMARK
Lunch and dinner have limited availability during very early and very late seatings, so if a slow-roasted prime rib sandwich at 11:30 a.m. sounds appetizing, give them a call. As for dinner, 5 or 9:30 are the only remaining choices. Walk-ins can take their chances, but the nice folk at Bymark don’t recommend it.

CANOE
The chronically booked-up castle in the sky can still seat for Friday lunch but doesn’t serve lunch at all during the weekend. All dinner spots are, unsurprisingly, taken. But don’t panic: they sometimes accept walk-ins. “It pains us to turn anyone away,” says manager Joanne Chimenti. She can sometimes cram a couple or two at the bar or chef’s rail.

CONVICTION
Very few lunch and dinner spots at Marc Thuet’s ex-con-staffed eatery are still available, and walk-ins aren’t a safe bet.

FOUR
Since it caters mainly to the 9-to-5 Bay Street crowd, Four is closed on weekends. Diners in the mood for an early supper Friday can still try to grab a seat.

MILDRED’S TEMPLE KITCHEN
Mildred’s can seat only small groups of two to four, and the only spots available are for late lunch or early dinner—very early, around 5 or 5:30. They may be able to seat walk-ins, but don’t try coming in around noon.

MOROCO CHOCOLAT
Friday, Saturday and Sunday, this Yorkville restaurant has open tables “all over the place,” and the 6:15 dinner seating on Saturday is particularly roomy. Moroco doesn’t do lunch on the weekend, but Friday-night walk-ins may be squeezed in.

NORTH 44
Friday and Saturday are still packed to the rafters, but walk-ins may still be accepted quite early—it opens at 5—or quite late. Better yet, cancellations are freeing up spots every day. Call for details.

SEVEN NUMBERS
The popular Danforth dining room still has a few tables left for the weekend, but there’s no rush: they’ve decided to extend their Summerlicious menu until the end of July.
