Toronto’s most ridiculous (and cookieless) ice cream sandwiches

Toronto’s most ridiculous (and cookieless) ice cream sandwiches

The classic cookie-and-ice-cream combo is pretty perfect. Despite this, restaurants and dessert shops across the city have come up with some imaginative—sometimes over-the-top—sandwich substitutions. Here, nine crazy ice cream sandwich alternatives. Because cookies shouldn’t have all the fun.

Dirty’s Bird’s waffle-wich

9 At Kensington Market’s fried chicken joint, waffles show up in both sweet and savoury menu items. Their Sweet Nuttins’ sandwich brings sweet-potato ice cream from Ed’s Real Scoop smushed between two mini waffles and topped with crushed, candied pecans. $6. 79 Kensington Ave., 647-345-2473, thedirtybird.ca

Big Crow’s brioche bun

8 This decadent s’mores ice cream sandwich—a brioche bun stuffed with Chapman’s vanilla, drizzled with chocolate sauce, sprinkled with graham cracker crumbs and crowned with a toasted marshmallow—will return to Big Crow’s menu later this spring (along with the sun and shorts). $7. 176 Dupont St., 647-748-3287, roseandsonsbigcrow.com

Scoop Shop’s monster macarons

7 Here, the oversize meringue cookies are loaded up with your choice of ice cream flavour (when it’s available, we recommend the roasted banana). The Dundas West parlour reopens for the season on April 15. $5.95. 808 Dundas St. W., 416-854-2949, scoopshop.ca

Colette’s petite choux

6 At this King West bistro, a house-made almond-crunch choux ball is torn in two and filled with Madagascar vanilla bean ice cream. The profiterole is then doused with creamy caramel and Valrhona chocolate sauce, and sprinkled with cocoa nibs. $12. 550 Wellington St. W., 647-348-7000, colettetoronto.com

Bake Shoppe’s pop-tart treat

5 Forget the toaster. These house-made pop-tarts, filled with Parkdale’s Kitten and the Bear jams and fused with Ed’s Real Scoop ice cream, have a higher calling. Available in April. $6. 859 College St., 416-916-2253, bakeshoppeto.com

Eva’s chimney cakes

4 Okay, so these treats are more like a cone than a sandwich, but we’re gonna let that slide. The magicians at Eva’s Original Chimneys food truck take traditional Hungarian kürtoskalacs (“chimney cakes”) and pipe them full of soft serve ice cream (or vegan coconut whipped cream). The new dessert will launch April 17 at the Evergreen Brick Works. From $8. originalchimneys.com

Junked Food Co.’s doughnuts

3 At this guilty-pleasure den on Dundas West, ice cream is sandwiched between glazed doughnuts, and then the monstrous concoction is rolled in things like popcorn, mini marshmallows, Fruity Pebbles or Nerds. $6.95. 1256 Dundas St. W., 647-343-5326, junkedfoodco.com

Bang Bang’s cinnamon buns

2 The newest creation at Ossington’s perpetually busy ice cream parlour is this secret-menu item: a colossal cinnamon bun, slathered in icing and loaded with one of Bang Bang’s signature flavours of ice cream. Get in line. Now. $7.50. 93A Ossington Ave., bangbangicecream.com

Burger’s Priest’s grilled cheese

1 It might not be pretty, but we’re putting the Vatican on Ice at number one for its sheer ballsiness. The grilled-cheese-and-ice-cream-sandwich walks a fine, delicious line between entrée and dessert. Bless you, Burger’s Priest. Various locations, theburgerspriest.com
