Sticky summer days can make people do loopy things, like cavort drunkenly in parks, pee on unfamiliar lawns and consume mass quantities of fluorescent, sugar-jacked slush. Today, you can do the latter without spending a cent: 7-Eleven, the international enabler of bad gastronomic decisions, is launching its annual slurpee drive. This year it includes an official slurpee dance, a Skrillex-style theme song, a motivational chinchilla named Pam (we’re confused too) and free slurpees for its first 1,500 Toronto customers. That’s right, free slurpees! We’ve even come up with some savoury recommendations to go with your 12 ounces of Mountain Dew Super Nova. For all seven snack-and-slurpee pairings, check out the slideshow below.
Suggested Pairing: Crush Lime + Red Hot Beef Burrito. The crisp slurpee stands up to the burrito’s robust Mexican flavours. Added bonus: your mouth will glow in the dark for a week
Suggested Pairing: Coca-Cola + Quarter Pound Big Bite. The classic All-American slurpee (nothing but water, glucose-fructose, caramel colour, phosphoric acid and caffeine) meets the classic All-American dog
Suggested Pairing: Everything + Buffalo Chicken Rollers. The terrifying mystery meat calls for an equally enigmatic beverage; go “suicide” style with a little bit of everything
Suggested Pairing: Raspberry Iced Tea + Maple Pancake Sausage Rollers. Tea is always the appropriate choice in the morning—even in slurpee form
Suggested Pairing: Mountain Dew Super Nova + Corn Dog Rollers. Food & Wine editor Ray Isle suggests champagne with corn dogs. Unfortunately, you still can’t get booze at convenience stores in Ontario. Try the unholy pink fluorescence and non-specific flavour profile of the Super Nova instead
Suggested Pairing: Crush “Lite” Cream Soda + Breakfast Taquito. At just 120 calories, a lite slurpee makes this a diet-friendly morning meal (we like the don't-look-after-you-bite method)
Suggested Pairing: Root Beer + Spicy Wing Zings. The traditional Superbowl snack calls for a bottle of suds; a cold Root Beer slurpee fits the bill
