TIFF Roundup: the fest’s best-dressed stars
For a truly killer red carpet look, a celebrity—or their stylist—must find a show-stopping ensemble that’s flattering, of-the-moment and hasn’t already been worn by another high-profile personage (not to mention make the right decisions about accessories, hair and makeup). Many nailed it at TIFF this year; here is a selection of our favourites.
• Ziyi Zhang, wearing a Marc Bouwer gown on the red carpet for Dangerous Liaisons, mixed Old Hollywood glamour (elegant draping, plus some retro waves in her hair) and daring details (the bejewelled neckline, keyhole cutout and high slit) with stunning results. Also, it doesn’t hurt that her skin is simply luminous.
• We have to give kudos to Kristen Stewart, who, facing more scrutiny than anyone else, pulled off a triumph in sheer Zuhair Murad at the On the Road premiere. She smartly kept her makeup and jewellery minimal, ensuring the sheath’s floral detailing remained the focal point.
• Ewan McGregor looked tough and cool in all-black on the red carpet for The Impossible. The snug cut of his pants and well-fitting blazer kept slightly casual from turning into sloppy, and the boots and tousled hair bring the kind of edge we expect from someone who has circumnavigated the globe on a motorcycle.
• Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s Thom Browne suit at the Looper premiere on opening night set the tone for what would be a strong showing from start to finish at the festival. He wears double-breasted like a pro, and the red button promoting his online profit-sharing production company looks great against the navy fabric. Swoon.
