A sojourn to Northern Ontario used to mean grabbing a sleeping bag and a can of beans and roughing it in the woods, all in the name of character building. Today, high-end camps offer perks that sound like something out of a brochure for a four-star resort. Here, a glimpse at life as a modern-day camp kid.

- HOLLYWOOD NORTH-NORTH
Tamakwa is known for having the highest concentration of famous people (or progeny thereof) per square metre. The camp was the inspiration behind the Roots brand—co-founder Michael Budman is an alumnus, and his celebrity pals Michael Douglas, Martin Short and Dan Aykroyd have made appearances. Larry David’s daughter, Henry Kissinger’s granddaughter and Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s daughter once shared a cabin.

PERKS
A state-of-the-art video-editing suite and sound studio for creating original movie scores.

NOTABLE ALUMNI
Ex-SNLers Chevy Chase and Gilda Radner, and U.S. senator Carl Levin

- DISNEYLAND
White Pine draws heavily from north Toronto and the 905. Its sweeping grounds are considered the most impressive of the top tier.

PERKS
The “Floating Land of Inflatable Dreams” is a sprawling blowup jungle gym anchored offshore. A master baker supplies campers with fresh croissants, there’s a nine-hole mini-golf course and a travelling tennis team, and Fefe Dobson’s guitar player leads the camp’s “School of Rock” program.

NOTABLE ALUMNI
Author Margaret Atwood, actor Billy Zane and artist Charlie Pachter

- THE COUNTRY CLUB
Manitou is among the priciest and the most old-school (boys can’t enter the girls’ section, and vice-versa). The director is an ex–White Piner who has dropped $6 million in renos since 1998.

PERKS
The golf program gives campers access to The Ridge at Manitou, a swanky club nearby. Other offerings include barefoot waterskiing and a photo lab and studio. Kids in the rock music program go “on tour” through Parry Sound for a day.

NOTABLE ALUMNI
Kevin O’Leary’s son, Atom Egoyan’s son and House creator David Shore’s three kids

- CAMP BAY STREET
Muskoka Woods is the cushiest, most over-the-top of them all. Case in point: attendees here are called “guests,” not campers.

PERKS
Kids enrolled in the “Wellness” program have access to manis, pedis and fruit smoothies. The four-week “CEO” program teaches campers how to become “the CEOs of their own lives” with help from Eagle’s Flight, a corporate training company. Other offerings include a TV broadcasting program, a slick webcast (the Jonas Bros. once gave campers an interview), cake decorating, sushi making, cheerleading and fashion design. Lacrosse is taught by Toronto Rock players and football by an ex-Argo.

NOTABLE ALUMNI
UNICEF child ambassador Bilaal Rajan and big-screen dreamboat Scott Speedman

- UCC SUMMER EDITION
Kilcoo caters to Toronto’s private school boys and touts itself as “The Maker of Men.” Director David “Lub” Latimer’s entrances are the stuff of legend: he has peeled into camp in a Dodge Viper, zipped across the lake on a Jet Ski wearing full scuba gear, driven an 18-wheel truck, galloped in on horseback and touched down in a helicopter.

PERKS
Kilcoo offers whitewater kayaking excursions, the largest ropes course in North America and canoe trips to the Yukon and the Northwest Territories.

NOTABLE ALUMNI
Sharkwater director Rob Stewart, Cadillac Fairview CEO Peter Sharpe

TL, if you are trying to incite class warfare, posts like these will do the trick.
?? Whats your point/issue margarets?
who cares about these people and what camp they attend,
why not offer information on camps that offer intersting experiemces and great times , as opposed to what people are spending money?
typical TL crap
”’???
Honestly folks – TL is a magazine targeted at urban professionals. If you’re going to just read the articles and complain about elitism, read the Eye Weekly — I’m sure there’s something for everyone in there.
