UFC 129 now unlikely to leave Toronto intact: Georges St-Pierre is coming to town

This actually is a surprise: Georges St-Pierre (GSP), having just fought in Montreal in early December, is getting right back in the ring for Toronto’s first brush with the UFC. According to the Canadian Press, St-Pierre will fight Jake Shields at the Rogers Centre on April 30. Not only is this kind of a fast turnaround for GSP, but it means that his fans, who are legion, are probably going to be invading Toronto from all over the Golden Horseshoe.

UFC 129 was already going to be a big deal as it was the first such match hosted in Toronto since Ontario lifted the bizarre ban on mixed martial arts in the province. The event is probably going to be insane. We don’t know what Toronto will look like after 60,000 UFC fans are released from the Rogers Centre after marinating in man-on-man violence for a few hours—not to mention the many thousands more pouring out of bars after enjoying the classic pairing of booze and beatings—but the aftermath might be almost as fun as the match itself.
