For the past little while, Rob Ford–based comedy has been a story of diminishing returns. Late-night hosts have had their fun with the mayor, leaving the wreckage of his term for lesser satirists to pick over. But there’s something about this clip from No, You Shut Up, a Jim Henson Company talk show that airs on American cable TV, that makes us remember what it was like before all this “crack scandal” stuff became as irritating and omnipresent as refrigerator hum. This time, Ford is a muppet beaver being interviewed by comedian Paul F. Tompkins. The beaver’s Ford impression is actually quite good. And that’s all you need to know.
The skit was a little funny. But this is part of the problem. Rob’s falling on the football field, running into the camera, and stating he has enough to eat at home were kind of funny. What about the 911 calls to his home? What about the jailhouse beating? What about Anthony Smith being murdered? What about Hanad Mohamed thrown from a balcony in Fort McMurray? Are these things funny? Comics have a job to do and that’s make you laugh. I don’t blame them. To those of us who are stuck with this train wreck, it is not funny. He is a criminal. He belongs behind bars.
Rich people don’t go to jail. They can afford good lawyers. For this reason the Toronto Police won’t charge him with anything unless they have rock solid proof of a crime. Most of us will be happy to crush him on October 27th. After that, except for the odd public drunk binge or 911 call to his home, most of us hope to never hear of the Dimwit Twin Mayors again.
