TTC drivers and other staff could be facing randomized drug testing if the board gets its way

Following an August crash that left one TTC passenger dead, the transit commission is considering instituting random drug tests for its drivers and other staffers. The TTC board will consider a report Wednesday that claims the TTC’s current program is inadequate, and calls instead for a policy that, according to the Globe and Mail, “would apply to most TTC employees reaching right up to TTC chief GM Gary Webster.” TTC brass can spin this as an example of valuing rider safety, especially at a time when they’re struggling with budget cuts and a less-than-perfect public image. But not everyone is on board with the idea. Councillor Joe Mihevc said the testing would amount to a human rights violation, Globe columnist Marcus Gee disagrees, and interestingly enough, union leader Bob Kinnear has been silent on the issue so far.
