Dalton McGuinty proposes a tax credit for businesses that hire new immigrants (because apparently they don’t speak English)
Dalton McGuinty wants to offer a $10,000 tax credit to businesses that hire new immigrants, a move the Progressive Conservative Party of Ontario quickly dubbed a “foreign worker subsidy.” Putting the merits of McGuinty’s plan aside, we can’t help but notice that the retort from the Conservatives sounds a little like the kind of fear-mongering about immigration that’s more common in American political races (or American cartoons). More disappointing than that, however, is the Toronto Sun piling on with a commentary that suggests if McGuinty is re-elected, all employers will be faced with two applicants for every job: a non-English-speaking immigrant or a lifelong Canadian. Um, since when is it assumed that immigrants in this province don’t speak English? The Sun also suggests the move is reminiscent of John Tory’s proposal to fund faith-based schools in the last election, only that proposal is praised for addressing an existing inequity. Right, because there isn’t a disparity in employment rates for immigrants. Oh, wait. Read the entire story [Toronto Sun ] »
Time for a change in Ontario. The Liberals have to go and this political gimmick, hopefully, will backfire on McGuinty. It is a shameless attempt to buy votes and if you have a problem with it, you’re labelled a tea bagger. In the real world, it is already a super competitive market to get a decent job and now this? What has happened to Ontario???
Tim Hudak practices a politics of division, envy and conceit that makes me ill. Read ANY major paper today and you’ll find him calling immigrants “foreign workers,” denying any such claim, then saying it again. Repulsive. READ THE ACTUAL PLATFORM!
Hey Cam you must be a foreign worker cause if you were a true canadian you would be upset if an employer gets a tax break for hiring an immgrant. The Gov should spend there time and money getting canadian first the chance to get jobs.like students who just graduated and cant get jobs due to lack of experience or any newly trade workers looking for a start or even get some of those welfare poeple off their asses. If immigrant come here to work they should first learn the language and then stand in line like everybody else.
Don’t vote liberal. We don’t want to throw money out the window. Immigrants should respect our country since they expect us to respect them.
This isn’t right its backwards companies should get tax breaks for hiring Canadian citizens not immigrants it promotes more immigration. I see immigrants who are less skill get hired before citizens… GTFO of my country and stop watering down our wages.
As I understand it this program will help foreign trained professionals get a job as lawyer, doctor, accountant or engineer. How would this be accomplished? The professional associations control the experience requirements for their profession, and they are provincially regulated. So what has the premier been doing for 8 years?
This is ridiculous, our unemployment rate is up, we have more people on welfare than we have ever had. But let’s keep increasing immigration levels and paying off business’ to hire them. Tell me when they are elected to office does all common sense go out the window???
