Immigration judge found guilty, may have to trade sex for refugee status in prison

Steven Ellis, the immigration judge charged with attempting to trade sex for refugee status with a 19-year-old woman, was found guilty today. In a ruling that shocked exactly no one, Ellis will have to face sentencing for breach of trust and an Immigration and Refugee Protection Act charge of bribery. The defence did the best with what little they had, arguing that though his behaviour was completely inexcusable, Ellis never actually said the word “sex.” Somehow that didn’t hold up against the secretly recorded meeting between him and the plaintiff, Ji Hye Kim.

We’re happy that justice has been served, though we can’t help but wonder: if the case had been a bigger deal, would it have played out on Law and Order next season? They are becoming as desperate for plot lines as immigration judges are for, well, never mind.
