Despite what Rob Ford says, light rail is best for Toronto: report
Turns out that David Miller’s baby may not be as ugly as some were beginning to think. A new report says that Transit City is the best option for Toronto. If the report is trying to take Rob Ford’s mind off of subways, though, it faces some challenges. The authors of the report are environmentalists, activists and organized labour groups—not exactly the mayor-elect’s favourite people.
According to the report, light rail transit offers the best solution not only from an environmental standpoint, but also from a monetary one. Reports the Star:
The report, which recommends the new city council move ahead on the Transit City light rail plan, notes that subways cost about three times as much as light rail to build.
Although subways carry more people and could, therefore, potentially take more cars off the road, their benefits are only maximized in densely populated areas.
The Transit City plan, which Mayor-elect Rob Ford has said he wants to replace with subways, is designed to serve the suburbs where that kind of density doesn’t exist.
We can’t help but think that the mayor-elect might have given this report more consideration if it had been written by others. Those tireless “Orientals,” perhaps?

Tireless Orientals? Where did that come from? Ok, I obviously know what you’re alluding to but please tell me what Rob Ford said in 2008 has do do with this story. You do realise how pathetic and unobjective it makes you look, right? Good grief! He’s going to be Mayor. Get over it already.
Re: Ford and transit – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D4DRtpO-r5U
Rockford, you voted for Rob Ford without even reading his election platform? I hope not.
No, why do you say that?
If light rail has a huge carbon footprint from a construction and operating stance then how is it good for the environment? Transit City Streetcar plan is anti-auto. Will create more gridlock by taking up road space away from cars. Yes, Genius, more bad emmissions = POLLUTION. Subways are the most cost effective and cost efficient mode of public transit for a city such as Toronto. Cost versus Benefits: benefits outweigh costs. Stop the Pork Barrel Politics and get tunnelling.
Save Our Sheppard
That u tube video pretty much sums it up.
I would cry if I wasn’t laughing so hard.
Toronto Life really needs to get a grip. Rob Ford is Mayor, elected by 47% of the population, garnering more votes than Miller ever received. Deal with it! These petty pot shots are really pathetic. The fact is that David Miller and his gang of free loaders have worn out their welcome. The adults are in charge now. If you are a member of the downtown elites (the same folks that read this rag), I suggest you either head for the hills or shut the f&%# up and stay out of the way. The Rob Ford Express is about to lay an a$# whoopin’ on all those who have become accustomed to taking from the hard working taxpayer. Bust out the popcorn baby, the next four years is going to be one hell of a show!!!!
Rob Ford’s greatest achievement will be cancelling this boondoogle of a project. You do need to realize that Ford would actually be saving Ontarians money via backing out of Transit City, to the tune of $4 billion. I don’t and never will agree with any scheme to build mass transit to places like Meadowvale and Sheppard (surrounded by parkland) or Finch and Highway 27. Transfer City is waste of both the taxpayer’s and transit user’s precious time and resources. We want transit that can take us across town in around one hour. Eglinton LRT fails at this even with its tunneled section, projected to take 80 minutes just to get from Kennedy to Pearson. A subway across the same area would do the job in 45 minutes. It’s better for us all to hold out for a superior option, than to accept mediocrity which only contributes to increased gridlock (turning 6 driving lanes into 4) and dumps even more people onto already at-capacity subway lines (B-D and YUS). Let’s not be pennywise and pound foolish. Cancellation fees should be minimal, particularly if Ford offers to renegotiate contracts with the same suppliers (e.g. Bombardier). At any rate it was Miller’s blunder in the first place to push forward with an unpopular plan, so I assign blame onto him for the incurred costs of backing out.
“The adults are in charge now. ”
The irony in you typing this is staggering.
Rob Ford is a simple-minded child, and he promises whatever angry children like you want, regardless of facts, evidence, cost, reality, or anything that makes you uncomfortable.
No, sorry, adults realize that sometimes you can’t have what you want, and they don’t use juvenile phrases like “ass-whooping”.
“We want transit that can take us across town in around one hour.”
We want, we want, we want. Well, sorry crybaby, you can’t have everything you want. Reality doesn’t conform to your temper tantrums.
