Yesterday, we wondered if Mayor Rob Ford’s success as a football coach and philanthropist in an underprivileged part of the city might mean he’s currently in the wrong job. Really, Ford’s efforts with the Don Bosco football program are probably a greater success than his efforts to cut expense budgets or eliminate taxes at city hall. Still, that isn’t stopping Ford and Councillor Giorgio Mammoliti from engaging in a game of chicken with the province over daycare funding. Mammoliti has opted for the who-will-blink-first negotiating tactic, suggesting that provincial cash is the only thing preventing thousands of kids from losing their daycare spaces. But municipal affairs reporter John Lorinc argues that if the funding doesn’t come through, living on welfare will actually be more affordable for low-income families than scraping money together for unsubsidized daycare. The sad thing here is that Ford doesn’t seem to realize—or doesn’t want to accept—that it’s families like the ones he helps at Don Bosco that will bear the brunt of his political grandstanding.
