Will lawyer Clayton Ruby be able to get Rob Ford fired?
Prominent lawyer Clayton Ruby filed a motion yesterday on behalf of Toronto citizen Paul Magder, accusing Ford of stomping all over Toronto’s Conflict of Interest Act. See, back in February, Ford asked council to let him off the hook for repaying donations that lobbyists made to his football charity. He also voted on the matter, a big no-no, since politicians who have financial interests in an issue are supposed to recuse themselves (and do all the time). Now, Ruby says that Ford ought to be thrown out of office for his sins—which sounds logical, but doesn’t seem all that likely. Over at Spacing Toronto, John Lorinc says Ford will probably persuade the court that he made an error in judgment, and emerge contrite but unscathed. And for those who were wondering, the public-minded citizen who sicced Ruby on the case is not the same Paul Magder who sold furs on Spadina and pressed the Supreme Court for Sunday shopping way back in the day.
