City politicians could raise taxes, and citizens might actually be okay with it (no, really)

That’s right, this week deputants at city hall asked politicians to make them pay more taxes. It turns out some Torontonians would rather open their wallets for city programs than see those same programs on the chopping block. Of course, the reigning administration still doesn’t think a tax hike is the right solution to the budget problem. Budget chief Mike Del Grande even lamented that (supposedly) none of the deputants suggested anything other than reinstating the vehicle registration tax. Thankfully, municipal affairs blogger Matt Elliott managed to sum up the current regime’s thinking in a single, succinct tweet: “I challenge you to give me *one* suggestion for how to survive these woods that’s not making a fire, calling for help or foraging for food.” Read the entire story [Toronto Star] »
