A bunch of times Justin Trudeau hung out with celebrities
Not to knock Justin Trudeau’s all-around performance as prime minister, but there’s one particular part of his job that he truly excels at: the part where he meets celebrities. He has enough charisma (and fame) that he can hold his own against Hollywood stars or foreign heads of state. Canada couldn’t have possibly picked a better person to hang out with Bono on its behalf. Here are some times Trudeau schmoozed with the most famous humans on earth.
Kelly and Ryan

Trudeau appeared on Live with Kelly and Ryan in Niagara Falls in early June. The co-hosts asked about Trump and the attacks in London, and fawningly joked about his looks, eyes and socks (they also unsuccessfully invited him to take off his shirt). But the most memorable moment was a blunder: when Trudeau said a female prime minister was “long overdue,” Twitter was quick to remind him about someone named Kim Campbell.

Trudeau met the Pope during a visit to the Vatican in May. He invited Francis to come to Canada, praised his leadership on climate change and asked him to consider apologizing for the Catholic Church’s role in Canada’s residential school system. The Pope was receptive and altogether cheery, which was a little different from his demeanour during Trump’s Vatican visit.

Last month, the PM popped into the Microsoft CEO Summit, a tech executive get-together in Redmond, Washington. He likely met a few of the 140 CEOs in attendance, but none bigger than Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, pictured here with his wife, philanthropist Melinda Gates, and one of the wealthiest men in the world, Warren Buffett.

Pakistani women’s-rights activist Malala Yousafzai teased Trudeau about his tattoos and doing yoga when she visited Parliament Hill to become an honorary Canadian. She had some weightier words, too, praising Canada’s welcoming reputation and asking the country to take global leadership: “If Canada leads, I know the world will follow.”

Trudeau caught up with Facebook co-founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg during the APEC (Asian-Pacific Economic Cooperation) meetings in Peru late last year. Zuckerberg was speaking at a session about global connectivity.

Watson was in Ottawa for the One Young World summit, where she was about to spend some time mingling with people like Cher and Kofi Annan in her capacity as a United Nations Women Goodwill Ambassador. Before she did that, though, she stopped by Parliament, where she praised Trudeau’s gender-balanced cabinet as “inspiring” and then posed for what is probably the most glamorous visiting dignitary portrait ever taken.
William and Kate

The prime minister was on the tarmac when the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge landed in British Columbia. U.K.-Canada relations remain friendly, despite young Prince George’s high-five snub.

Bono gave a keynote address at a Montreal donor conference for the Global Fund, which works to eradicate AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis. During his time at the lectern, the U2 front man praised Trudeau for his commitment to gender equality. Later, the two men posed for pictures and hugged. This was the second time they’d met (that we know of). The first was in 2015.

Trudeau attended the Tragically Hip’s nationally televised farewell concert in Kingston in a jean jacket—which, if not exactly the garment of choice for GQ’s “most stylish politician,” was at least venue-appropriate. Gord Downie praised Trudeau from the stage, and called on the PM to work on behalf of Canada’s First Nations.

The prince was in Toronto to promote the Invictus Games, a sporting event for wounded military veterans that will take place in Toronto in 2017. He and Trudeau met for a photo-op at the Royal York.

During Trudeau’s official visit to Washington D.C.—the same one where he had a dinner-hour bro-down with Barack Obama—he spent an evening at a gala held in his honour by Canada 2020, a progressive think tank. The Weeknd was a guest at the party, and that’s why we have this priceless picture of the PM and the singer together, pre-haircut.
An earlier version of this story referred to the PM attending the Hip's farewell concert in Hamilton. It has since been corrected.
