This is what Ontario Place's new public park could look like

There’s nothing much happening at Ontario Place at the moment, but if Queen’s Park has its way we’ll soon be spending lazy afternoons in a “romantic garden” there, and stretching our legs on a “multi-use lower trail.”

Bad nomenclature aside, the first architectural renderings of a planned 7.5-acre public park for the eastern edge of Ontario Place look pretty nice. Design firms LANDinc and West 8 have clearly done some thinking about how the area, which has been shuttered for redevelopment since February 2012, might be made more useful to downtown residents than the kiddie amusement park that used to be its main attraction.

The new public park will occupy a sliver of land that once served as a parking lot. We still don’t know what will end up happening with the rest of Ontario Place. All the province has said definitively is that it won’t be installing a casino there.

Renderings of the proposed park were shown to attendees at a public consultation meeting that took place on Wednesday. They’re conceptual designs, so there’s a good possibility that the final park—which the provincial government has said it hopes to complete by 2015—will look somewhat different.
