Dear Urban Diplomat: Is a Mississauga home address a good enough reason to dump my Tinder date?

Dear Urban Diplomat: Is a Mississauga home address a good enough reason to dump my Tinder date?

I recently matched with a guy on Tinder who seemed perfect. He described himself as a “proud Toronto boy,” and we spent hours messaging about our favourite neighbourhoods and sharing TTC gripes. On our first date, he was charming and funny, but when I suggested we go back to his place, he dropped this bomb: though he works downtown, he actually lives in Mississauga. He never lied, but I feel misled, and it seems like a huge red flag. Am I wrong?

—6 and the City, Roncesvalles

While I get that you don’t want your love life to be dictated by a GO train schedule, it seems like you’re feigning offence at his suburban bait and switch to mask your own 416 snobbery—after all, in Roncey, you’re about as close to him as you are to the Beach. I recommend swallowing your 905er scorn and going on another date. But if you’re convinced you can find—and hit it off with—another ambitious, interesting charmer who happens to live in your little south-of-Bloor box, well, happy swiping. “Toronto boy” is probably better off without you.
