Each season, The Shows invite a handful of high-profile Canadian designers (many of whom now show in New York, London and Paris) to preview their collections in the days leading to Toronto Fashion Week. We’re posting full galleries from the buzziest runways. Here’s what trendsetters will be wearing in fall 2013.
DESIGNER
Jeremy Laing
IN A SENTENCE Laing lives in Toronto, but has shown his line, aimed equally at young women and their mothers, at New York Fashion Week since 2006.
THE SCENE Since Laing and his partner Frank Griggs are both locals his show is always well populated by friends. Last night’s crowd included artists (John Caffrey of Kids on TV, singer Gentlemen Reg), shop owners (Lola Bakerman of LAB Consignment, Jackie O’Brien of Jonathan and Olivia), and fashion industry mainstays (makeup artist Robert Weir, Holt Renfrew’s Moira Wright and stylist Corey Ng).
THE COLLECTION Laing’s clothes are often much more complex than they look, as was the case last night with the panelled silk dresses that can be folded and worn in several different ways. The collection has a little more colour than the designer’s last two outings, including golden pants, tops and jackets made from brown seersucker that was roller painted with gold foil in Japan. Toronto artist Vanessa Maltese created the cross motif repeated throughout the collection and also collaborated with Laing on the large metal necklaces.
BEST PIECES The gold trench coat is a winner, as is an easy shirt dress with bold punches of yellow and blue.
