First, the buyers and editors at Fashion Week started wearing varsity jackets. Then, the wedge sneaker—a high heel–running shoe hybrid—sent trendsetters scampering to the Nike Store. This season, the athletic aesthetic hit the mainstream: Joe Fresh is making track shorts, Topshop is teaming up with Adidas on a luxurious capsule collection, and downtown boutiques are selling out of $1,300 leather backpacks by Alexander Wang. The look is most popular with the young and lithe, who hit Parkdale bars in clothes fit for a high school PE class.
