Sale of the Week: the $1.2-million Islington home with a wild colour scheme

Address: 7 Hillcroft Drive
Neighbourhood: Islington Agent: Jill Stewart and Rob LePage, Royal LePage Real Estate Services Ltd., Brokerage

The Property: This upgraded Islington home on a quiet crescent has unusual, angular design features, a curved central staircase and some of the boldest colour choices we’ve seen since last year. The yards, both front and back, have been converted almost entirely into low-maintenance stone courtyards.

The History: When the home was custom-built in 1989, its unusual floor plan ranked it among the city’s more contemporary dwellings. The sellers, a family, bought it about 16 years ago. According to the selling agent, they added new trim and fireplaces, redid the basement and installed a colourful Cameo kitchen inspired by Cirque du Soleil. The high-flying colour scheme extends to the bedrooms upstairs.

The Fate: As far as the selling agent knows, the buyers have no plans to alter the home’s colourful interior design—which, to put it mildly, is not to everyone’s taste. They may eventually need to do renovations on certain parts of the house, though, like the master bedroom’s dated en suite bathroom.

The Sale: While the interiors here may be a little too reminiscent of the early ‘90s for some people, the property does come with a few undeniable advantages. For one, the floor plan is about 1,000 square feet larger than the area average. This sweetened the deal for the buyers, who fell in love with the home’s design and decor when they saw photos online. In the end, they were the only ones who registered an offer. The property sold after 30 days on the market.

By the Numbers:

• $1,185,000 • 3,045 square feet, above grade • 95 per cent list price • 30 days on the market • 4+1 bedrooms • 4 bathrooms • 3 fireplaces • 2-car attached garage • 1 offer
