Anthropologie now open in Yorkville
Downtowners have been waiting anxiously for Toronto’s second Anthropologie to open, and so it did, very quietly, last Friday (the grand opening is set for July 31). Located at 80 Yorkville Avenue, the two-floor store is 7,000 square feet of womenswear, accessories and home decor. We suggest heading over quickly, before the crowds descend.
In the meantime, check out our slide show of goodies from Toronto’s first Anthropologie store at the Shops at Don Mills here.
Sadly, the store’s beautiful displays and aesthetics overshadow how low-quality (and frumpy) the clothing actually is. Branding can work wonders, especially when targeting the not-so-bright Yorkville crowd.
The company should learn how to treat their employees properly. The “Customer” Associates you currently see at the Yorkville location may not be there in a month or two; the turnover rate is very quick.
I actually prefer the Don Mills store having checked out both. It’s bigger for one thing so you can browse without constantly bumping into someone. And they had more housewares imo.
One thing that I loved at the Yorkville shop was the Ostriches made out of newspaper. Definitely check that out when you’re there.
Is it that bad to work for anthropologie? I noticed that they’re always hiring.
The Yorkville sales people are very young. I much rather shopping at the Don Mills location. Bigger and free parking.
I love Anthropologie but I do agree that some of the clothes are pretty pricey for the quality. I think it’s the uniqueness that gets me AND the housewares. BUT I took my mother to check it out and she kept cracking jokes about the clothes, the prices and the housewares – which she said I can buy at most ma and pop shops in the Landsdowne and Bloor area. Yep. Branding does go a long way. I’m going to check some ma and pas and pick up some Portuguese wares next time I’m in Little Portugal. Oh and my mother also loved the one male staff who had his bright blue undies showing pretty proudly while he rang people in.
Anthropologie offers a great vibe, and it’s fun to browse. If you’re patient, you can good deals.
For similar housewares such as pillows, bedding & knobs, Haveli Home in Liberty Village offers comparable merchandise at much more reasonable prices.
I agree – branding is everything. Anthropologie + Urban Outfitters are one in the same (same owners, naturally): cheaply constructed garments at a HUGE mark-up. Read your labels people. “Made in China” does not a fine garment make.
