Likely General is part of an haute trading post trend that kicked off with the Drake General Store on West Queen West five years ago and now includes newcomers like Dundas West’s Easy Tiger Goods and Parkdale’s North Standard. The diverse stock at the new Roncesvalles shop ranges from jewellery and art to pickles and plush toys, with an emphasis on handmade, artisanal goods that should play well on the gentrifying strip.
Owner Brooke Manning, a musician and OCAD grad, has an eye for lighthearted pieces like a bear-shaped floor pillow and prints by artist Jamiyla Lowe as well as understated accessories like bags by Baggu and sunglasses by Spitfire. Manning, a Roncey resident, also hopes to make the store into a community hub by having suppliers teach Sunday evening workshops ($40–$60) on wallet-making, bookbinding, weaving, screen-printing and other crafty techniques.
