Sunny Fong’s details wow the audience on night four of LG Fashion Week

Just when we thought the celebs had left the building, we spotted Corner Gas’s Tara Spencer-Nairn sauntering in for Vawk by Sunny Fong on the Thursday evening of LG Fashion Week. Spencer-Nairn is a cheerleader for Canadian design, consistently showing up to shows like this one and becoming a makeshift socialite in the process (though can you truly be a socialite if you’re gainfully employed?). Fong is known for playing with texture; in previous seasons he’s used laser-cut details as well as petals cut and sewn by hand. This fall/winter set is no different. Fong used appliqué knit details on the sleeves of coats and the fronts of dresses. We weren’t a fan of the leopard print (is this the Century Room?), but the rest of the collection was strong, including “Mongolian” fur treatments and some sharply tailored teal and burgundy jackets that showed his continuing growth as a designer. Also known for using “real models” courtesy of diversity model pioneer Ben Barry, Fong trotted out one spectacular-looking older woman, who walked in kitten heels. After almost tripping at the end of the catwalk, she got a loud “woo” from the audience (chivalry must be dead; no one jumped to her rescue). The runway must have been cursed, because during the closing walk, another model nearly tripped. Fong showed a touch of prowess, stopping the fall with some swift support. Strong designs and strong arms. Let’s hope he’s a bachelor.
