How Pink Tartan designer Kimberley Newport-Mimran would spend a perfect Saturday in Toronto

How Pink Tartan designer Kimberley Newport-Mimran would spend a perfect Saturday in Toronto

I love to start my Saturday by walking into Forest Hill Village with my 11-year-old daughter, Jacqui. Depending on my mood, I’d pick up a green tea or a dry cappuccino at Starbucks. Then I’d get some fashion mags at Type Books (427 Spadina Rd.)—they have a great international selection—and Jacqui would pick up a graphic novel from the store’s fun kids’ section. After that, we’d run up to DeSerres (124 Eglinton Ave. W.) to get some art supplies, then go home, where I’d read and she’d draw. We’d head down to Yorkville next, and stop at Zaza Espresso Bar (75 Yorkville Ave.) for a second cappuccino and a little treat before going out for lunch. Trattoria Nervosa (75 Yorkville Ave.) is one of our favourites; I like the chicken salad and Jacqui orders the pizza. If it’s a beautiful day, we’d sit on the patio at One (116 Yorkville Ave.) and Jacqui would order the burger and share a bite with me. Then we’d have a look through Teatro Verde (98 Yorkville Ave.), a beautiful floral and decor store in a grand Georgian building. I enjoy browsing for elegant style treasures, whether it’s for the home or quality vintage pieces from a clothing shop like The Cat’s Meow (180 Avenue Rd.). I collect vintage fashion for inspiration, and it’s a fun place to visit with Jacqui. We’d get some groceries on our way home: fresh fish at Pisces Gourmet (1097 Yonge St.) and vegetables at Harvest Wagon (1103 Yonge St.). Or maybe we’d go out for a family dinner. For a quiet neighbourhood meal, it’s Scaramouche (1 Benvenuto Pl.). I love the view of the city from the top of the building, and it feels a little old world. I’d order the seared liver with frites. Another favourite is Playa Cabana (111 Dupont St.) for the best fish tacos in the city, and delicious agave margaritas. It’s a tiny spot, so it can be hard to get a seat, but it’s fabulous and close to home—a perfect end to the day.
