Condo of the Week: $450,000 for a unit with a view of Honest Ed’s
The place: A one-bedroom suite with a den and balcony on the fifth floor of a new mid-rise near Honest Ed’s.
The history: Hariri Pontarini Architects designed this 200-unit building and won a Toronto Urban Design Award for it in 2015, mainly because it doesn’t look like a 200-unit building. The jury noted that the structure’s “mass” is broken up with cut-outs and contrasting colours of brick. The condo registered in late 2014.
Big selling point: The amenities would impress even the most jaded hipster. There’s an Wi-Fi-enabled lounge with plush leather couches, an outdoor bar with with a barbecue, a hobby room for tinkering with beater bikes, a gym with a yoga studio, a “pet spa” for hosing down the schnauzer—and yes, even shuffleboard.
Possible deal breaker: Parking is only available with two-bedroom units, so whoever buys this will need to nab a street parking permit, invest in a bike, or rely on the subway (which isn’t far away). Also, Ed’s is set to be redeveloped into a massive warren of rental apartments starting in 2017, so the view from the balcony is about to get a lot less kitschy.
